What to do and why
Create a working shelter
Gather wood, make a Work Bench, and build a small enclosed room with a door, background walls, a light source, a table, and a chair. This gives you a safe place for the first night and a foundation for NPC housing.
Make basic tools and storage
Use the Work Bench to inspect new recipes and build a chest as soon as practical. Store ore and unfamiliar materials instead of discarding them; new crafting stations will reveal uses later.
Explore with a return plan
Gather surface resources and look for cave entrances while carrying light and a way home. At night, retreat or take shorter trips until your equipment and movement are more reliable.
