About You Can Kana - Learn Japanese Hiragana & Katakana
You Can Kana is a casual, single‑player title that teaches the Japanese phonetic alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana. The game offers brief lessons that introduce each character, provide audio pronunciation, and display interactive stroke‑order guides that adapt to a learner’s progress.
After completing the introductory material, players may enter Challenge Mode, which tests reading speed and accuracy using real Japanese words drawn from JLPT vocabulary. Progress is tracked through Steam achievements and saved with Steam Cloud.
01 / THE GUIDE
Quick Lessons
The lesson system presents short, engaging segments that introduce Hiragana and Katakana characters one at a time. Each segment is designed to be concise so learners can absorb the visual shape without feeling overwhelmed.
A quick test lets players jump straight to the end of the lessons, allowing them to assess their knowledge without completing every prior lesson. This offers a checkpoint for those who feel confident and wish to gauge retention.
- Try a few lessons before the test to see which characters feel unfamiliar.
- Use the quick test as a short‑term checkpoint after a study session.
02 / THE GUIDE
Audio Pronunciation
Each character includes an audio clip that pronounces the sound, supplied by Learn Japanese Adventure. Hearing the correct pronunciation helps learners associate the visual symbol with its spoken form.
Repeated listening to the clips gives learners the chance to compare the pronunciation with their own attempts and refine their listening skills.
- Play the audio repeatedly for characters that feel new.
- Listen first, then try to reproduce the sound before checking the clip again.

Stroke Order Interaction
For every character, the game displays an interactive guide that shows the correct stroke order. Players can follow the strokes interactively, reinforcing the sequence required for proper writing.
The guide updates as the learner progresses, allowing repeated practice of difficult strokes and supporting memorisation through kinetic feedback.
- Follow the on‑screen prompts slowly at first, then increase speed as you become comfortable.
- Focus on stroke direction rather than only the final shape.

Adaptive Lessons
The lesson engine tracks which characters a player struggles with and automatically presents those symbols more frequently. This adaptive approach tailors practice to individual weaknesses.
The system concentrates on the most challenging symbols, showing difficult characters more frequently as you progress.
- Notice which characters appear repeatedly; they indicate areas needing review.
- Allow the system to guide your study rather than forcing a fixed schedule.
05 / THE GUIDE
Challenge Mode
When learners feel ready, they can start Challenge Mode, which presents real Japanese words and their English translations. The mode measures reading speed and accuracy, offering a practical test of recognition.
The vocabulary pool is drawn from the JLPT, aligning practice with the official proficiency tests and providing exposure to commonly tested terms.
- Read each word carefully before moving on to maintain accuracy.
- Review the English translations after each round to reinforce meaning.
