About Xanadu Next
Xanadu Next is an exploration‑centric action RPG from Nihon Falcom that follows a gravely injured knight revived by ancient magic on mist‑shrouded Harlech Island. The knight seeks the legendary Dragon Slayer sword while uncovering the mystery of the phantom Castle Strangerock.
The game presents a single, interconnected map linking icy peaks, fiery caverns, waterways, forests and magical ruins. Real‑time combat, stone‑tablet lore, and systems such as Guardian fusion and bone‑carved keys give players multiple ways to engage with the world.

Story & Setting
The narrative introduces scholar Charlotte L. Wells, who travels to Harlech Island to investigate the legendary Castle Strangerock. Her childhood friend, a fallen knight, accompanies her but is slain by a mysterious swordsman, prompting his rebirth through ancient magic.
Reborn, the knight’s new purpose is to locate the Dragon Slayer sword. Along the way, stone tablets and letters reveal a broader tale of magic, war, an ancient dragon, and a figure known as the “Black Bride,” tying the island’s mystery to the lost paradise of Xanadu.
- Observe the timing of the knight’s death; it marks the transition to the main quest.
- Read each translated tablet for clues about the island’s deeper history.

World Exploration
Harlech Island and the ruins of Xanadu form one massive map where icy peaks connect to fiery caverns, old waterways, mystical forests and magical ruins. The design encourages discovery of secret passageways, alternate routes and hidden items throughout the environment.
Exploration is rewarded by stone tablets and letters that expand the backstory, as well as new techniques that become available when concealed routes are uncovered, encouraging players to revisit areas after gaining new abilities.
- Use natural landmarks to orient yourself when searching for shortcuts.
- Return to previously visited zones after learning new skills; new paths may appear.

Real‑Time Combat
Combat occurs in real time, letting players fight hordes of monsters with a wide variety of weapons. Each weapon carries its own set of skills that are learned through repeated use, mirroring the system seen in Ys SEVEN.
The skill‑learning mechanic adds an element of progression to each armament, encouraging players to experiment with different weapons to discover unique abilities and adapt to varied enemy types.
- Repeatedly use a weapon to unlock its attached skills more quickly.
- Swap weapons when an enemy shows resistance to your current attacks.

Skill & Ability Growth
Players can choose to level‑down in order to tweak their stats, fuse with “Guardians” to gain new passive abilities, learn spells, and carve keys from monster bones. These options provide several avenues for customizing the knight’s capabilities.
Level‑down lets players adjust attributes after gaining experience, while Guardian fusion adds passive effects without altering core combat. Spell learning and bone‑key crafting further diversify the character’s toolkit.
- Consider a level‑down after major boss fights to rebalance stats for upcoming challenges.
- Test Guardian passive abilities alongside spells to see which combinations feel most effective.

Unique Gameplay Systems
The game introduces bone‑carved keys, allowing players to craft keys from monster bones and reduce reliance on pre‑made keys. This system integrates directly with monster hunting and inventory management.
Charlotte, the scholar companion, translates stone tablets and letters in real time, providing immediate narrative context that enriches exploration.
- Collect monster bones whenever possible; they may become useful keys later.
- Listen to Charlotte’s translations for lore clues that deepen the story’s context.
