About Werewolf: The Apocalypse — The Book of Hungry Names
Werewolf: The Apocalypse — The Book of Hungry Names is an interactive novel set in the World of Darkness where you play a werewolf tasked with rebuilding a shattered pack. The story follows the aftermath of the Answering Tiger’s betrayal, urging you to confront the Wyrm and protect Gaia’s remaining guardians.
The game is entirely text‑based, offering hundreds of choices that affect your pack, your survival in New England’s wilds, and the way you wield Rage. You can select gender, auspice, tribe, and shift among five forms while exploring a narrative driven by imagination rather than graphics or sound.
01 / THE GUIDE
Narrative Premise
The story begins after the Answering Tiger, a Wyrm Spirit, destroyed the Broad Brook Sept and defiled its caern. The Tiger deceived the pack, turning trust into resentment and causing internal Rage to explode.
Now the Stormcat, the former Patron Spirit, summons you to gather survivors, rebuild a pack, and confront the lingering Wyrm influence across New England’s woods and towns.
- Compare the Tiger’s deception with other Wyrm tactics to spot narrative patterns.
- Note how the Stormcat’s call frames your objectives as both survival and restoration.

Pack Building
You must locate human and werewolf survivors hidden in woods and cities, learning their stories to reconstruct the werewolf nation. Not all wolves are trustworthy; those consumed by Rage become empty shells, while others may need compassion.
Choosing allies influences the pack’s composition and future options, as you decide whom to shun or support based on their state of mind and loyalty to Gaia.
- Track which survivors display Rage versus those who retain their Wolf spirit.
- Consider the balance of tribes when recruiting to diversify your pack’s strengths.

Survival Mechanics
Exiled from your former pack, you must manage basic needs like shelter and warmth, especially during harsh winter nights that can be lethal. Seeking allies among spirits and humans can provide crucial aid.
The environment itself is a challenge; navigating decaying towns and savage woods requires careful decision‑making to avoid death from exposure or hostile entities.
- Prioritize finding shelter before engaging with hostile spirits.
- Observe how weather descriptions affect the urgency of your choices.

Rage Usage
Rage is portrayed as a double‑edged weapon: a living weapon of Gaia that can destroy enemies or consume you. You can wield it with “savage cunning and keen discretion,” deciding whether to unleash it or restrain it.
Your choices around Rage influence narrative outcomes, reflecting the tension between becoming a monster and staying true to Gaia’s guardianship.
- Reflect on moments when Rage is described as a potential downfall.
- Compare Rage decisions with earlier pack‑building choices for thematic consistency.

Shapeshift and Auspice Choice
Players can select male, female, or nonbinary characters and choose an auspice (moon‑sign) and tribe—Bone Gnawer, Child of Gaia, Glass Walker, Shadow Lord, or Silver Fang. You may shift among five forms to either slaughter foes or outwit them.
Territory claims and spirit healing unlock Gifts, granting abilities such as summoning animals, seeing the past, or entering the spirit world, tying form changes to narrative progression.
- Experiment with different auspice‑tribe combos to see how they affect narrative flavor.
- Note how each form’s description aligns with the type of challenge you face.
