About Wartales
Wartales drops you into a continent scarred by a plague that ended the Edoran Empire a century ago. Villages, abandoned mines and tombs litter the land, while bandits and thieves make every encounter a potential contract or threat.
You lead a band of mercenaries, craft gear, develop a camp and fight with a turn-based system. The game offers solo play and online co-op for up to four players, with shared loot, money and meals around a campfire.
01 / THE GUIDE
Harsh Post‑Plague World
The setting is a continent devastated by a plague that collapsed the Edoran Empire a hundred years earlier. Ruined villages, deserted mines and ancient tombs mark the map, each hinting at a forgotten era.
Travelers meet bandits, thieves and desperate survivors, turning every location into a possible contract or danger. The hostile environment pushes players to plan routes and manage resources carefully.
- Note the type of settlement you approach; it often signals nearby contract opportunities.
- Compare the difficulty of bandit camps versus tombs to decide where to start your raids.

Recruiting and Customising Mercenaries
You can recruit mercenaries with distinct specialisations, skill sets, weapon preferences and personalities. Their abilities and gear are shaped through an RPG-style progression system.
The camp you develop houses luxuries, tools and equipment that help the group endure daily hardships. The camp also serves as a hub for meals and shared moments after combat.
- Balance weapon preferences across the party to handle different enemy types.
- Mix personalities to create varied dynamics during camp interactions.

Tactical Turn‑Based Battles
Combat runs in a turn‑based system that rewards careful planning and strategic thinking. Selecting the right mix of characters, gear and tactics is essential for each encounter.
Success depends on positioning, timing of abilities and exploiting enemy weaknesses, encouraging players to think several moves ahead rather than relying on brute force.
- Map out enemy positions before engaging to spot optimal flanking routes.
- Compare equipment choices with the characters and tactics you plan to use in an encounter.

Online Co‑Op for Up to Four Players
Wartales supports online co‑op, letting a band of up to four players explore the open world together. Teams can plan tactics, share loot and end the day with a communal campfire meal.
Shared resources such as money, equipment and supplies foster teamwork, while each player contributes to the overall strategy against hostile inhabitants.
- Assign roles before combat—frontline, ranged support and healer—to keep engagements balanced.
- Use the campfire moment to discuss upcoming contracts and divide loot fairly.

Progression, Crafting and Camp Development
An RPG progression system pairs with crafting, allowing you to upgrade equipment and improve camp facilities. Adding luxuries and tools to the camp aids recovery and daily endurance.
Bounties, contracts and exploration of ruins provide the materials needed for crafting, creating a loop where success fuels further advancement.
- Prioritise crafting tools that boost camp recovery rates early on.
- Compare material yields from mines versus tombs to optimise gathering trips.
