About Wagotabi: A Japanese Journey
Wagotabi: A Japanese Journey is a single‑player RPG that teaches practical Japanese through an adventure set in real Japanese locations. Players create a character, explore towns, and converse with over 400 voiced NPCs while learning vocabulary, grammar, and writing systems.
The game introduces hiragana, katakana, and kanji progressively, using spaced‑repetition tests, diverse mini‑games, and an interactive dictionary. Features such as cloud saving, adjustable text size, subtitle options, and both mouse‑only and controller input make it accessible on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Core Language Learning
The adventure centers on everyday situations—asking for directions, ordering bento, expressing likes and dislikes—so players encounter the most useful words and grammar first. Each word appears in context with example sentences and voice‑overs.
A built‑in spaced‑repetition system (SRS) tracks difficult items, and more than fifteen question types test sentence building, conjugation, audio recognition, and other skills, encouraging active recall throughout the quest line.
- Review the SRS daily to keep struggling words fresh.
- Compare your own sentence attempts with the provided examples to notice patterns.

Hiragana, Katakana & Kanji
Stroke‑order guides for hiragana and katakana are displayed, and a calligraphy view lets players practice each character. Kanji are introduced gradually, and a “Kanjidex” records collected characters.
Each kanji entry includes tags, grammatical formations, and example sentences, providing reference material that can be consulted during quests or review sessions.
- Use the stroke‑order guide before attempting the calligraphy mini‑game.
- Use the tags on kanji you find tricky for quicker lookup.

Interactive Dictionary
The dictionary offers illustrations, tags, and example sentences for every word and can be opened at any time in a 360‑degree view. It also shows conjugation tables and tooltips during dialogue.
Tags and icons help players focus review on specific language areas whenever needed.
- Filter by tags to study themed vocabularies such as food or travel.
- Check the conjugation tooltip when unsure about verb forms.

Mini‑Games for Practice
A variety of mini‑games target kana recognition, kanji matching, and listening comprehension, turning repetition into playful challenges. The game is fully voiced in Japanese, reinforcing auditory skills.
They offer another way to practice the same concepts in different formats, encouraging repeated practice.
- Start with kana mini‑games to solidify basic reading before tackling kanji challenges.
- Replay audio‑focused games to improve listening accuracy.
