About VHS World '89

VHS World ’89 drops you into a cramped 1989 video‑store where a massive heap of 3,360 VHS tapes blocks the floor. You receive the keys, a wall of empty shelves, and the task of returning every cassette to its proper genre department.

The game is a calm first‑person organizing simulator with no timers, no fail state, and a points‑and‑skills upgrade loop. Play solo or with friends via online co-op, and watch the chaotic pile turn into a tidy store while the store hums softly in the background.

01 / THE GUIDE

First‑Person Organizing

You pick up a tape, examine its hand‑made parody cover and title, decide which of the fourteen genres it belongs to, and place it on the matching shelf. This action repeats for each cassette until the central heap disappears.

The process is repeated without any clock or score to beat, and you can save at any time, allowing you to sort for minutes or hours at your own pace.

  • Take a moment to read the cover art; the parody often hints at the genre.
  • If you prefer, use the mouse‑only option to handle tapes.

02 / THE GUIDE

Fourteen Genre Departments

The store is divided into fourteen departments: Action, Comedy, Horror, Sci‑Fi, Drama, Kids, Romance, Thriller, Western, Fantasy, Adventure, Sports, Crime and Anime. Each tape belongs to exactly one of these sections.

Placing a tape on the correct shelf fills that department and gradually empties the central heap, giving a clear visual cue of progress as each genre becomes organized.

  • Group tapes with similar titles before moving them to speed up sorting.
  • Check the department names if you are unsure where a tape fits.

03 / THE GUIDE

Points and Skill Upgrades

Every correctly shelved tape awards points. Accumulated points can be spent on upgrades, letting you become the fastest clerk in town.

Upgrades are optional; you may continue sorting without spending points, but the loop provides a measurable sense of improvement as you progress.

  • Spend points on upgrades that match your preferred sorting rhythm, such as faster handling if you sort quickly.
  • Save points for later if you enjoy a slower, more methodical pace.

04 / THE GUIDE

Late‑80s Low‑Poly Aesthetic

The game uses a warm, low‑poly art style that evokes a late‑1980s video‑store, complete with ambient lighting and a soft hum that reinforces the nostalgic setting.

Each tape features a unique hand‑made parody cover, adding humor and a sense of discovery as you recognize the jokes hidden in the artwork.

  • Adjust the custom volume controls to keep the store hum subtle while you focus on sorting.
  • Play background music from the era to enhance the nostalgic atmosphere.

05 / THE GUIDE

Co‑op Play Options

VHS World ’89 supports single‑player, local multiplayer, and online co‑op, allowing multiple players to sort tapes together using the same calm pacing and upgrade system.

Co‑op does not introduce timers or competitive pressure; it simply lets friends share the organizing experience and split the workload across the fourteen departments.

  • Divide genre departments between players to reduce duplicate effort.
  • Coordinate upgrade purchases so all participants benefit equally.
