About Variables 2
Variable 2 is a stand‑alone tower‑defense title that blends free‑form path building with tower synthesis. Players place a core and a strange outlet, then repurpose existing map objects to craft routes that suit their strategy, all on increasingly complex terrain.
The game offers five basic towers that can be extracted from supplies and combined into numerous advanced towers via recipes. Equipment and plugins further modify tower performance, while a shard‑group system lets players pre‑plan gear and plugin acquisition before entering the game.
01 / THE GUIDE
Free Route Construction
Unlike traditional tower‑defense games, Variable 2 lets you freely position the core and the strange outlet, then use original map objects to lay a road that benefits your defenses. This flexibility lets you adapt to the more complicated terrain introduced in the sequel.
The constructed path directly influences how enemies travel, so thoughtful placement of obstacles and shortcuts can change the difficulty of each wave. Because the road is built from existing objects, the environment itself becomes a strategic element.
- Experiment with different object placements early to see how they affect enemy flow.
- Consider the terrain’s complexity when deciding where to place the core for optimal coverage.

Tower Synthesis
Variable 2 provides five basic towers that can be extracted from supplies. By gathering these supplies you can follow recipes to synthesize more powerful advanced towers. Higher‑level towers feature increased attributes and stronger characteristics, allowing you to meet varied wave challenges.
The synthesis system encourages planning, as each advanced tower requires specific basic components. Balancing extraction of basic towers with the need to keep energy growth intact is a key strategic decision.
- Keep a stock of basic towers to ensure you can follow multiple recipes.
- Prioritize recipes that boost attributes needed for the current wave type.

Equipment System
Each tower can be equipped with items that grant basic attributes and special mechanisms. These mechanisms can dramatically increase a tower’s output when used wisely. Equipment is earned by accumulating energy values, which rise by one point each round.
When you use supplies to extract a base tower, any extra energy growth you have accumulated is cleared, so timing equipment acquisition against extraction is important for maintaining high output.
- Delay extraction until after you have secured valuable equipment to avoid losing energy growth.
- Match equipment mechanisms to tower strengths for maximal output.

Plugins and Challenges
Plugins offer additional assistance during a run, but each plugin requires you to accept a small challenge. These challenges provide a trade‑off: you gain help at the cost of meeting an extra condition.
Choosing which plugins to activate depends on your confidence in handling the associated challenges and the current difficulty of the wave.
- Select plugins whose challenges align with your play style.
- Use plugins sparingly if the required challenges feel too risky.

Shard Group Planning
The shard group lets you arrange the acquisition of equipment and plugins in advance before the game begins, replacing the random acquisition of the previous game. You obtain shard groups by spending in‑game money to extract them.
This pre‑planning tool gives you control over which gear appears, allowing you to tailor your load‑out to the upcoming terrain and enemy composition.
- Invest money in shard groups early to secure desired equipment for later rounds.
- Review upcoming terrain to decide which equipment or plugins will be most useful.
