About Total War: NAPOLEON – Definitive Edition

Total War: NAPOLEON – Definitive Edition bundles every DLC and update released for the original title, delivering a massive strategic experience across two decades of Napoleonic warfare. Play as France, Great Britain or Spain in the new Peninsular Campaign, command legendary units from the Heroes and Imperial Eagle packs, and fight historic battles like Friedland.

The edition adds 32 new regions, dozens of elite units, unique agents, and a political alignment system that lets you shape the Iberian Peninsula’s loyalties. With single‑player and multiplayer modes, adjustable difficulty, and full Steam integration, the game offers hundreds of hours of deep, turn‑based strategy and real‑time battles.

01 / THE GUIDE

Peninsular Campaign

The Peninsular Campaign is a standalone map focused on the 1811‑1814 conflict in Spain and Portugal. Players choose France, Great Britain or Spain, each with a distinct strategic feel and starting position. The map contains 32 controllable regions, and the French aim to convert regions to pro‑French sentiment while the British and Spanish rely on income and guerrilla support.

Guerrilla warfare is central: the Spanish have permanent access to guerrilla units, while the British can liberate regions in exchange for guerrilla aid. The French must suppress resistance and spread political alignment across the peninsula.

  • Balance income and military pressure; the British start with limited regions but strong overseas revenue.
  • Use guerrilla units to harass French forces and slow their advance.

02 / THE GUIDE

Guerrilla Unit Types

All three nations can recruit five new guerrilla unit types that excel at stealth and can deploy outside their faction’s normal zones. The roster includes Tiradores (skirmisher infantry), Cazadores, Lanceros (lancer cavalry), Husares (light cavalry), and a Leader unit representing a general. These units are designed for hit‑and‑run tactics and can disrupt enemy formations.

Because they can appear beyond standard deployment areas, guerrilla units are useful for flanking, ambushing, and supporting larger armies without committing regular troops. Their presence reflects the historical “little war” tactics of the Spanish resistance.

  • Deploy guerrillas near enemy supply lines to cause attrition.
  • Combine guerrilla skirmishers with regular infantry for layered defense.

03 / THE GUIDE

Political Agents

Two new agent types influence regional politics. Provocateurs, available to France and Britain, can promote anti‑opposition sentiment, incite unrest, speed research, and passively spy. Priests, for Spanish and Portuguese nations, have similar abilities to stir unrest and sway sentiment. Additionally, the Spanish gain a Guerrillero agent that can harass enemy armies, locking them for a turn and causing attrition.

These agents help shape the Political Alignment system, especially for the French who seek to increase pro‑French sentiment across the peninsula. Effective use can accelerate territorial conversion and weaken enemy control.

  • Place Provocateurs in high‑value regions to speed up research and destabilize opponents.
  • Use the Guerrillero to lock enemy armies before a major engagement.

04 / THE GUIDE

Coalition Battle Pack

The Coalition Battle Pack adds six new units and the historic Battle of Friedland between France and Russia (14 June 1807). Units include Lifeguard Hussars, Coldstream Guards, Archduke Charles' Legion, Luetzow's Freikorps, Life Hussars, and Semenovski Lifeguard. These units bring elite cavalry, disciplined infantry, and high‑morale guards to the battlefield.

The pack expands both single‑player and multiplayer options, allowing players to field these historically significant forces in custom battles or campaign scenarios.

  • Use Lifeguard Hussars to chase down skirmishers and artillery.
  • Deploy Coldstream Guards to boost morale of nearby troops.

05 / THE GUIDE

Heroes & Imperial Eagle Packs

These packs introduce over 20 elite units that become available after specific technological advances or territorial control. Heroes of the Napoleonic Wars include units such as the 7th Lancers (France) and 15th Hussars (Great Britain). The Imperial Eagle Pack adds units like the Grand Battery of the Convention (France) and HMS Elephant (Great Britain). Both packs appear in single‑player and multiplayer modes.

Elite units provide superior stats, morale, and unique abilities, allowing players to build an unstoppable force once the required conditions are met.

  • Prioritize research that unlocks elite units to gain a battlefield edge.
  • Capture territories that trigger elite unit availability early in the campaign.
