About Total Annihilation

Total Annihilation (TA) is a real‑time strategy game released in 1997 by Cavedog Entertainment. It pits the machine‑driven Core against the human‑based Arm in a galaxy‑spanning war that has lasted over four thousand years. The game introduced fully articulated 3D units and terrain, supporting high resolutions and dual‑monitor setups. Expansions and community mods have added thousands of units, maps, and missions, keeping the engine active well beyond its original hardware requirements.

01 / THE GUIDE

Story and Background

The Core, a collective of humans and AI, enforces a patterning mandate that transfers consciousness into machines, prompting the Arm—colonies that refuse—to rebel. Over four millennia the two sides have devastated a million worlds, each seeking total elimination of the other.

Campaigns follow each faction’s commander defending a home world, traveling through Galactic Gates, and delivering a final strike on the enemy’s core planet—Empyrean for the Arm or Core Prime for the Core.

  • Compare the opening missions of each side to see how the narrative frames their respective home worlds.
  • Notice how the use of Galactic Gates influences the pacing of the campaign’s story progression.

Units and 3D Terrain

TA features aircraft, amphibious tanks, infantry bots, hovercraft, ships, submarines, factories, defenses, and long‑range weapons, all rendered as fully articulated 3D models. Units can climb, enter, and move around true 3D terrain on extra‑large generated maps.

The game offers diverse world types—grasslands, forests, deserts, archipelagos, lava, metal, ice, crystal, acid, and moons—with variables such as gravity, tides, and wind affecting weapon effectiveness and resource production.

  • Experiment with unit placement on different world types to observe how terrain influences combat.
  • Use the tracking feature to follow projectiles and understand their interaction with varied terrain.

Campaign Structure and Objectives

Each side provides more than 150 official units and 25 missions in the single‑player campaign. Objectives include protecting structures, capturing key enemy units, or eliminating all opposition.

More powerful units and weapons unlock after specific missions or events, gradually expanding the player’s arsenal as the story advances.

  • Prioritize early missions that unlock higher‑tier units for later battles.
  • Track which objectives grant unit unlocks to plan resource allocation.

Expansion Packs

The Core Contingency (April 1998) adds 75 new units—including the Krogoth—50 maps, 25 missions, and six new world types. Battle Tactics (June 1998) contributes four units, six maps, and 100 missions.

A final patch (v3.1c) introduces six additional units, such as a resurrection kbot, further expanding tactical options.

  • Mix expansion units with base units to discover new synergies.
  • Explore the new world types for terrain‑specific strategies.

Multiplayer and Community Mods

TA supports full multiplayer, allowing players to watch, join battles, and form allied teams that share resources, information, and units. The community has produced thousands of third‑party units, maps, utilities, missions, and total conversion mods.

Modern modifications push the 16‑year‑old engine to new limits with scripting for mass transport, map‑wide teleportation, upgradeable units, and true shields.

  • Join a community server to experience the latest user‑created units and maps.
  • Compare vanilla multiplayer matches with modded games to gauge the impact of community content.
