About The Royal Writ

The Royal Writ is a single‑player strategy deck‑builder where each card is an animal subject marching toward an enemy base. Players place cards on a battlefield, dealing damage while risking permanent loss if a card reaches the base before the run ends. Card loss stays permanent for that run, turning each sacrifice into a story fragment that shapes the kingdom’s legacy.

Two campaigns provide distinct challenges. The First Campaign pits you against a growing rebellion amid deep pits and poison swamps. The Second Campaign adds experimental gunpowder weapons, forcing you to dodge bullets as well as environmental hazards. Both campaigns feature unique cards, bosses, and escalating difficulty.

01 / THE GUIDE

Card Permadeath

When a card reaches the enemy base before victory, it is permanently destroyed and removed from the deck for the rest of that run. This rule makes every advance a calculated risk, as losing a card means it cannot be used again until a new run begins.

Because lost cards stay unavailable for the remainder of the run, each playthrough feels distinct. Players must balance short‑term aggression with long‑term deck sustainability, shaping a narrative of sacrifice and triumph.

  • Reserve high‑damage cards for later stages when the risk of loss is lower.
  • Use weaker or expendable cards to probe dangerous lanes early.

Campaign Structure

The First Campaign challenges you with a rebellion while you navigate deep pits and poison swamps. New cards, bosses, and environmental hazards appear as you progress, testing your ability to adapt to terrain‑based threats.

The Second Campaign introduces gunpowder weapons, adding bullet‑dodging to the existing hazards. This new threat forces a shift in strategy, as you must now avoid both environmental damage and projectile attacks to survive.

  • Experiment with different card abilities when moving from the first to the second campaign.
  • Observe bullet patterns early to reduce unnecessary card loss.

Memorable NPC Encounters

Throughout the journey you meet quirky animal characters such as a mantis dentist, a goat tactician, and an impatient boar shopkeeper. These encounters add humor and personality, reinforcing the game’s medieval absurdity.

Each NPC is described as having a personality and purpose, contributing to the kingdom’s legacy as you advance. While their mechanical impact isn’t detailed, they enrich the narrative texture of each run.

  • Listen to NPC dialogue for possible story clues.
  • Enjoy the humor; it does not affect core gameplay.

Challenge Modes

Beyond the two main campaigns, the game offers special challenge modes with unique rules. These modes test your skills under altered conditions, providing additional replay value.

Each challenge mode introduces its own set of constraints, encouraging players to experiment with different deck compositions and strategies to meet the specific objectives.

  • Treat each challenge as a sandbox for testing unconventional card combos.
  • Focus on the mode’s unique rule set before applying familiar strategies.

Accessibility Features

The game includes adjustable text size, camera comfort, color alternatives, custom volume controls, and a mouse‑only option. It also supports full controller input, including DualShock and DualSense, and can be played without timed input.

These options let players tailor the experience to their preferences, ensuring the strategic depth remains approachable regardless of hardware or sensory needs.

  • Enable mouse‑only mode if controller input feels restrictive.
  • Adjust text size for clearer card reading during long runs.
