About The Great War: Western Front
The Great War: Western Front™ is a World I strategy title that mixes turn‑based grand‑strategy with real‑time tactical battles. Players act as Theatre Commander, handling deployment, research and resource distribution, and as Field Commander, directing units on the Western Front from 1914‑1919.
Four modes—Campaign, Historical Battles, Skirmish and Multiplayer—let you experience a single‑player saga, replay iconic clashes, create custom scenarios or test strategies against other players. Terrain degrades over time and weather changes affect artillery and movement, shaping each encounter.
01 / THE GUIDE
Theatre Commander (Turn‑Based)
In the Theatre Commander layer you allocate forces, research technologies such as poison gas and tanks, and distribute resources across the Western Front. Each turn’s decisions set the conditions for later real‑time engagements and influence the overall progress of the war.
The turn‑based phase emphasizes long‑range planning; moving units, choosing research paths and managing supplies all affect the options available when you later assume the Field Commander role on the same front.
- Balance research and deployment each turn to keep both technological and positional advantages.
- Check the front map before allocating resources to anticipate terrain changes from earlier battles.
02 / THE GUIDE
Field Commander (Real‑Time)
As Field Commander you control units in dynamic real‑time battles, build trenches, and order infantry assaults. Tactical choices must be made quickly to defeat the opponent and to secure objectives on the battlefield.
Trench networks you construct persist when you later return to the same location, and weather such as snow or rain modifies artillery performance and unit movement, requiring you to adapt your tactics on the fly.
- Use persistent trenches to create defensive strongpoints for future encounters.
- Observe weather effects on artillery and adjust your attack timing accordingly.

Technology Research
Research advances a tech tree that includes period‑accurate weapons such as poison gas and tanks. Introducing these technologies earlier can shift the balance of power in both turn‑based planning and real‑time combat.
Each faction possesses unique abilities and gameplay styles, encouraging varied strategic approaches depending on which side you play.
- Prioritize tank research if you plan aggressive breakthroughs in later battles.
- Consider gas research for defensive tactics in trench‑heavy scenarios.

Battlefield Evolution
The game records the condition of each battlefield; earlier fights leave craters and destroyed terrain that remain when you return. This visual degradation reflects the cumulative impact of the war and alters tactical options.
Environmental changes, including weather shifts, affect unit performance. Snow and rain can reduce artillery effectiveness and slow movement, making each revisit a distinct tactical challenge.
- Plan routes that avoid heavily cratered zones to maintain unit speed.
- Use weather‑induced artillery penalties to your advantage when defending.

Multiplayer Modes
Multiplayer offers online PvP matches where you test your strategies against human opponents. The same turn‑based and real‑time mechanics apply, allowing competitive play of both strategic planning and tactical execution.
Matches can be set up through Steam’s online services, letting you test your strategies against other players.
- Observe opponent deployment patterns in the turn‑based phase to anticipate their real‑time tactics.
- Experiment with different faction abilities to discover effective counter‑strategies.
