About The Fox's Way Home
The Fox's Way Home is a single‑player adventure where you watch a Fox Shrine Maiden’s dance and must remember every movement. Your goal is to spot impostor apparitions, called Mononoke, and correctly accuse them to light lanterns and return to your original world.
01 / THE GUIDE
Dance Observation
The core activity is watching the Fox Shrine Maiden’s ritual dance and memorising each step. Distraction by her alluring performance can cause you to miss crucial parts of the sequence.
Accurate recall is essential because any mistake in later accusations ends the ritual instantly, preventing progress toward the exit.
- Watch the full dance once before making any judgments.
- Take note of unique gestures that differ from the maiden’s usual moves.

Mononoke Deception
Mononoke are apparitions that mimic the Fox Shrine Maiden’s appearance and attempt to lure you into a false ritual. They look very similar to the real maiden, making visual comparison vital.
When you think a figure is an impostor, you must call out the deception immediately; a wrong call ends the ritual.
- Compare the current dancer’s movements to the original sequence you memorised.
- Focus on subtle differences rather than the overall silhouette.

Lantern Progression
Each successful banishment of a Mononoke lights one lantern. The game requires all eight lanterns to be illuminated before you can return to your world.
If you incorrectly accuse either the real maiden or a Mononoke, the ritual fails and the lantern remains unlit.
- Track which lanterns are already lit to avoid repeating mistakes.
- Prioritise confirming the maiden’s identity before accusing a suspect.

Apparition Encyclopedia
Every Mononoke you correctly identify can be recorded in an in‑game encyclopedia. This collection grows as you repeat rituals and encounter new forms.
The encyclopedia serves as a personal reference, helping you recognise future impostors more quickly.
- Review the encyclopedia before each new ritual to refresh your memory.
- Note any recurring visual cues that appear across multiple Mononoke.
