About The Escapists 2
The Escapists 2 drops you into a sandbox prison world where daily routines—roll call, jobs, and strict schedules—must be followed while you secretly plot a breakout. Each prison adds new layers, roofs, vents, and tunnels, expanding the space for covert planning.
Up to four players can cooperate or compete online or split‑screen, and a map editor lets anyone design new prisons to share via Steam Workshop. Customisation, crafting, and a new combat system round out the strategic simulation experience.
01 / THE GUIDE
Prison Environment
The game features eleven prisons, each with multiple floors, roofs, vents, and underground tunnels, providing varied terrain for escape planning. Players must obey routine tasks such as roll call and prison jobs while navigating these spaces.
Locations range from the icy Fort Tundra to a desert‑crossing train and even a space‑themed facility, each presenting distinct visual themes and layout challenges that affect how tools and routes can be used.
- Observe guard patrol patterns in each new prison to identify safe windows for movement.
- Use vertical spaces like roofs and vents to bypass crowded corridors.

Multiplayer Modes
The title supports up to four players in co‑operative or versus modes, with drop‑in/drop‑out online and split‑screen options. Friends can join to coordinate elaborate escapes or race each other to break out first.
Versus mode adds a competitive element where players try to escape faster than opponents, and a courtyard “prison punch‑up” offers a direct rivalry mechanic.
- Coordinate roles in co‑op, assigning one player to gather resources while another crafts tools.
- In versus, focus on quick‑access routes to shave seconds off escape time.

Character Customisation
Players can personalise their inmate with over 300 customisation options, allowing each prisoner to look distinct while planning escapes. Customisation is purely aesthetic and does not affect gameplay mechanics.
The system encourages players to create a visual identity for their character, reinforcing the sandbox nature of the simulation.
- Choose contrasting colours to make your character easier to spot during chaotic moments.
- Save multiple outfits to quickly switch between co‑op partners.

Crafting Escape Tools
Limited in‑prison resources can be combined into weapons and tools, such as using soap and socks or stealing forks to chip tunnels. Duct tape is highlighted as a versatile component for many creations.
Players must locate everyday objects, then follow specific recipes to produce items that aid in tunnelling, disguising evidence, or defending against guards.
- Collect magazines early; they are needed for poster‑based disguises.
- Prioritise duct tape because it appears in most crafting recipes.

Prison Map Editor
The Prison Map Editor lets players build custom prisons using all standard rooms, fences, and guard dogs, without requiring duct tape. Creations are accessed via the Custom Prisons menu on the main screen.
Completed maps can be uploaded to Steam Workshop, where other players can download, subscribe to, and play them in solo, co‑op, or online multiplayer sessions.
- Test your custom map in single‑player first to ensure guard routes function as intended.
- Include multiple escape routes to increase replay value for others.
