About The Drifter

The Drifter is a pulp adventure thriller from Powerhoof, the developers behind Peridium and Crawl. It follows Mick Carter, a restless drifter who hops a box-car back to his hometown, witnesses a violent murder, and is pursued by hi-tech soldiers before drowning in a reservoir. His consciousness is thrown back into his own body moments before his death, leaving him framed for the killing, tormented by his past, and haunted by the sense that something followed him back from the other side.

The game is a 2D point-and-click adventure with the brakes cut: fast-paced storytelling comes first, with down-to-earth puzzles serving as the glue. It pairs raw, crunchy pixel art and high-impact animation with professional voice acting and a brooding dark-synth cinematic score, and the Steam listing notes point-and-click or controller play with unique twin-stick controls.

01 / THE GUIDE

Story & Setting

Mick Carter has drifted for years, moving from job to job and never settling anywhere. Jumping a box-car toward his old hometown, he witnesses a violent murder, is chased by hi-tech soldiers, and is drowned in a reservoir. His consciousness is then ripped away and thrust back into his body seconds before his death.

From there Mick is framed for the murder he witnessed, hounded by his own past, and haunted by the feeling that something came back with him. The story pulls him into a web of shadowy corporations, murder, and a madman's thousand-year obsession, moving briskly from one situation to the next.

  • Pay attention to dialogue, since the story moves quickly and motives are revealed through conversation.
  • Expect the plot to keep pushing forward; don't linger expecting long detours from the main thread.

Puzzle Design

Puzzles are described as down-to-earth and unobtrusive, tying the fast-paced story together with an investigative feel. Mick is a practical guy, so solutions stay grounded rather than abstract.

The developers emphasize quick, lean pacing: you should never be wandering around lost or confused. One moment you might craft a Molotov cocktail from over-proof rum; the next, interrogate a crooked neurosurgeon or swing from a high-rise window on a fraying extension lead.

  • Think practically about everyday items; the puzzles favor grounded, real-world solutions.
  • If you feel stuck, keep engaging with the scene rather than wandering, since the design aims to keep you oriented.

Audio & Visuals

The game bursts with raw, crunchy pixel art and high-impact animation, giving it a striking retro-thriller look.

A brooding dark-synth cinematic score underscores the atmosphere, and the story is professionally voice acted. The listing notes stereo sound and custom volume controls for tailoring the audio.

  • Use the custom volume controls to balance dialogue and music to your taste.
  • Let the score set the mood during tense scenes; it's a deliberate part of the thriller tone.
