About The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker

The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker is a medieval‑fantasy single‑player adventure that places you in the role of the cursed lord Rothar Aercrest. Set in the remote woodlands of Imberthale, the game blends open‑world exploration with deep dialogue, quests, and a rivalry against the dark wizard Gabrius.

Progress is driven by twelve distinct skills—four combat and eight crafting/harvesting—allowing you to shape combat style, gear, and utilities. While the core experience is solo, a limited social multiplayer lets you see other players in towns, chat, and inspect equipment.

01 / THE GUIDE

World and Narrative

Imberthale is a sprawling open world populated by NPCs with dialogue and quests that focus on human pettiness, revenge, and greed rather than world‑ending stakes. The central plot follows Rothar’s struggle against the powerful wizard Gabrius, whose curse binds the former lord to a fate he must break.

The story unfolds through varied quests with deep writing, revealing the feud between two magic wielders and the consequences of Rothar’s past rulership. Exploration rewards players with lore and items that deepen the narrative.

  • Read NPC dialogue fully to uncover hidden quest hints.
  • Visit remote corners early; they often contain unique story fragments.

Skills and Progression

The game features twelve skills—Attack, Defence, Archery, Sorcery, Smithing, Crafting, Tailoring, Alchemy, Mining, Woodsmanship, Fishing, and Cooking. Gaining experience in any skill unlocks new interactions, abilities, and crafting options tied to that discipline.

Combat actions raise Attack and Defence, while harvesting actions raise Woodsmanship or Mining, each granting passive and activated abilities as levels increase. Skill trainers provide new traits once thresholds are met.

  • Focus on a small skill set early to unlock its full ability tree.
  • Balance combat and gathering to keep progression steady.

Combat and Spellcasting

Combat allows both melee and ranged weapons, supplemented by a spellbook containing combat and utility spells. New spells must be found and learned, and higher‑level spells often require specific ingredients gathered through crafting skills.

Special attacks and spells become available as you level combat skills, letting you wield more sophisticated weapons and armor while accessing new traits from trainers.

  • Combine a melee weapon with a low‑level spell for flexible encounters.
  • Gather ingredients during exploration to avoid spellcasting delays.

Crafting and Harvesting

Woodsmanship, Smithing, Tailoring, Alchemy, Mining, Fishing, and Cooking provide materials and items ranging from bows to potions, bombs, and poisons. Harvesting wood not only yields bow components but can also open world obstacles and speed travel.

Alchemy expands beyond potions to create bombs and poisons, while cooking supplies restorative foods that help survive tough battles.

  • Use woodsmanship to clear paths that would otherwise require long detours.
  • Experiment with alchemy combinations for useful combat utilities.

Social Multiplayer

Although the core game is single‑player, an online mode lets you see other adventurers in towns, taverns, and cities. Interaction is limited to chatting and inspecting each other's equipment; trading or cooperative gameplay is not available.

Players can choose to enable the feature for big cities only, keep it always on, or opt out entirely for a fully offline experience.

  • Enable city‑only mode to reduce visual clutter while still seeing other players.
  • Use equipment inspection to gather ideas for your own builds.
