About Subliminal
Subliminal puts you in a world where light is a tangible material you can pick up, carry, and bend. By moving light fixtures you can open doors, reshape spaces, and reveal routes that would otherwise stay hidden.
Each area you explore is a fragment of a memory rendered with Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen lighting and Nanite geometry. As you progress the environment destabilises, and unsettling, non‑human figures appear, turning quiet exploration into a tense psychological experience.
01 / THE GUIDE
Light as a Physical Material
Illumination in Subliminal is described as a material you can grasp from ceilings and carry. Placing a light fixture in a new spot can open a door or alter the shape of the space you occupy, directly affecting navigation.
The game stresses that changing an area’s lighting may completely transform the surrounding environment. Shadows shift, pathways appear or disappear, and the world reacts to where you choose to position each light source.
- Move a light a short distance and watch how the shadows and walkable areas change.
- Notice which shadows disappear when you raise a light; they often indicate hidden routes.

Memory‑Based Locations
Every space you enter represents a fragment of a memory, such as basements, water parks, or play places. These fragments are rendered in meticulous detail, giving each area a distinct, familiar yet uncanny feel.
As you move between fragments the environment becomes less stable: doors may loop back, slides can lead to impossible places, and visual cues begin to contradict each other, reinforcing the theme of fragmented recollection.
- Look for recurring visual motifs; they often link separate memory fragments.
- Listen for subtle audio changes that may signal a shift in the memory’s stability.

Perspective and Lighting Puzzles
Puzzles revolve around manipulating perspective and lighting. Adjusting illumination can change how the space is perceived, opening new pathways or concealing existing ones, making light placement a core solving tool.
The description notes that altering an area’s lighting may cause the entire space to change, encouraging careful observation of how shadows and angles respond to each adjustment.
- Rotate the camera before placing a light to see which angle reveals the most useful shadows.
- Compare before‑and‑after views of a room to understand how lighting shifts affect accessible routes.

Terrifying Consciousness Events
Encounters are described as psychologically terrifying events born from your own consciousness. A non‑human figure may chase you through decaying hallways and endless slides, adding tension to exploration.
The game notes that hesitation or slow puzzle solving can make the world feel like it is closing in, linking player pace with the intensity of these encounters.
- Maintain a steady pace when solving puzzles to keep the atmosphere from becoming overwhelming.
- Pay attention to faint breathing sounds; they often precede a looming encounter.
