About Stronghold: Warlords
Stronghold: Warlords expands Firefly Studios’ real‑time strategy line by moving the castle‑building focus to East Asia. Players command Mongol hordes, imperial warriors and samurai clans as they besiege Japanese castles and Chinese cities. The game offers a mix of historical campaigns, skirmish trails, multiplayer battles and a sandbox mode where AI lords can be recruited and upgraded.
Across 31 campaign missions, 45 skirmish scenarios, 28 multiplayer maps and a free‑build sandbox, players can employ gunpowder‑powered siege weapons, manage AI warlords, and shape their economy with new unit types such as fire lancers and ninja. Steam integration adds achievements, trading cards, a workshop, cloud saves and a level editor.
01 / THE GUIDE
Historical Campaign Missions
The campaign mode presents 31 missions that span eras from 3rd‑century BC China to the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Mongol Empire. Each mission places the player against a historical warlord, requiring both siege and economic management.
Each mission brings a fresh set of warlords to command, introducing new strategic options as you progress through the campaign.
- Compare the defensive layouts of early Chinese cities with later Japanese castles to spot recurring weak points.
- Observe how gunpowder weapons change the pacing of sieges across different historical periods.

Skirmish Trail Scenarios
Skirmish mode offers 45 unique trail missions that test castle‑building and siege expertise. These scenarios are separate from the campaign and focus on specific challenges rather than a narrative.
The trails provide a sandbox for experimenting with new units and siege weapons without the constraints of a story mission.
- Use the trails to trial different warlord perks before committing them in a campaign.
- Mix unit types—horse archers with fire lancers—to discover effective combinations.

Multiplayer Maps and Modes
Online play features 28 distinct maps where up to four human players and four or more AI opponents can clash. The mode supports both PvP and co‑op configurations, letting friends defend together or compete.
Map variety encourages different tactical approaches, from open plains suited to Mongol horse archers to tighter fortifications favoring samurai defenses.
- Select maps that match your preferred unit composition for a smoother learning curve.
- Experiment with mixed human‑AI teams to gauge the impact of AI warlords on battle flow.

AI Warlords Recruitment and Upgrades
For the first time, Stronghold: Warlords lets players recruit AI lords—called warlords—who provide unique perks, characteristics and upgradeable abilities. Warlords can be assigned to industry, border fortification, weapon forging or coordinated attacks.
Each battle, whether campaign, skirmish or multiplayer, presents a new roster of warlords, ensuring that the strategic layer remains fresh throughout play.
- Prioritize warlords with industrial perks when focusing on rapid army production.
- Pair border‑fortifying warlords with siege‑focused ones to balance defense and offense.

New Units and Gunpowder Siege Weapons
The game adds several unit types, including imperial fire lancers, disciplined samurai, Mongolian horse archers and ninja. Gunpowder‑based siege weapons such as the hwacha arrow launcher, siege tower and fire oxen expand the options for breaking fortified positions.
These additions reflect the historical shift toward gunpowder in East Asian warfare and give players fresh tactical tools for both offense and defense.
- Deploy fire oxen alongside siege towers to pressure enemy walls from multiple angles.
- Use ninja units for quick raids on enemy supply lines before a major assault.
