Steam Multiplayer & Game Modes
Stronghold 2 offers online play for up to eight participants through Steam matchmaking, featuring two distinct skirmish types: Kingmaker and Deathmatch. Both modes pit rival lords against each other, but they differ in objectives and pacing, giving players a choice between longer strategic contests and quicker combat bursts.
When Steam multiplayer is not used, the game provides an offline skirmish option where players face computer‑controlled opponents. This preserves the core strategic experience without requiring an internet connection, allowing the same castle‑building and siege mechanics to be enjoyed in single‑player sessions.
- Try Kingmaker for a longer, objective‑driven match that rewards honour.
- Choose Deathmatch when you want a fast, combat‑focused session.

Economy, Crime & Punishment
Peasants can become overworked and malnourished, which may lead them to commit crimes. The game lets you respond by either rehabilitating offenders or executing them using gibbets or gallows, directly influencing the settlement’s stability.
Your chosen method of justice impacts resource flow, as a stable population supports food production and tax income, while high crime rates can hinder economic growth and limit the ability to fund war efforts or host banquets.
- Maintain adequate food supplies to keep crime rates low.
- Observe how rehabilitation versus execution changes resource balance.

Siege Warfare & Close Combat
Sieges in Stronghold 2 require careful planning, as attacking armies must breach walls before engaging in close combat. Once a breach occurs, fighting continues inside the castle’s interior structures, adding a layer of tactical depth.
Defending lords need a strong war economy and solid fortifications to withstand assaults, while attackers must coordinate siege engines and troops to create openings and push the battle into the castle’s inner chambers.
- Assess your war economy before committing to a siege.
- Consider the layout of interior structures when planning attacks.

Custom Map Creation & Steam Workshop

Through full Steam Workshop integration, creators can publish their maps for the community to download and play, expanding the game’s content beyond the official map pack and encouraging collaborative design.
- Start with the provided map pack as a template for your own designs.
- Test your custom map against AI before publishing to ensure balance.
