About Spelunky
Spelunky is a platformer where each run creates a new, fully‑destructible level filled with monsters, traps, and treasure. Players descend underground, making choices that directly affect their survival and the loot they collect.
The game offers single‑player, local co‑op for up to four players, a deathmatch mode with 72 arenas, and a Daily Challenge that generates a fresh set of levels each day.
01 / THE GUIDE
Roguelike Platforming
Every level is randomly generated, so no two playthroughs share the same layout. The environment can be destroyed, allowing players to alter paths or eliminate hazards during a run.
Because each mistake can end the run, quick thinking and a solid grasp of the game's mechanics are essential for staying alive.
- Observe enemy patterns before engaging.
- Use terrain destruction to open shortcuts.

Explorer's Journal
A dusty journal, given by mentor Yang, records the player's progress across runs. It logs discoveries, items found, and deaths, providing a personal history of each expedition.
The journal updates automatically after each run, giving players a concrete reference for what they have uncovered and what remains hidden.
- Review the journal after each run to notice missed secrets.
- Note recurring hazards to plan future routes.

Local Co‑op Play
Up to four players can join a single session on the same screen. Each participant controls their own explorer, sharing the same world and resources.
Co‑op can lead to cooperation or interference, as players may help each other survive or create chaos that impacts everyone's chances.
- Communicate constantly to avoid accidental kills.
- Assign simple roles, such as collector or defender.
04 / THE GUIDE
Deathmatch Arenas
Players can unlock 72 distinct arenas designed for competitive battles. These arenas are separate from the main exploration mode and can be played against friends or AI opponents.
Each arena presents its own layout and hazards, requiring players to adapt their tactics for each match.
- Spend a few rounds learning each arena's layout.
- Experiment with different explorers to see how abilities affect combat.
05 / THE GUIDE
Daily Challenge Mode
Every day a new set of levels is generated for a single‑attempt challenge. Players have one chance per day to complete the run and compare their score with the Steam community.
The mode emphasizes careful planning, as the limited attempt forces players to prioritize high‑value items and efficient routes.
- Quickly scan the level layout before committing to a path.
- Target valuable items early to boost the final score.
