About Sons of Valhalla
Sons of Valhalla is a pixel‑art Viking saga that mixes side‑scroll combat, roguelike progression, and base‑building. You control Thorald Olavson, a warrior seeking vengeance against the Jarl who burned his home and fled to England.
The game asks you to manage limited funds, recruit varied troops, and construct siege engines while traveling a storm‑shrouded English countryside. Each death restarts the invasion, but Odin‑granted runestones let you keep permanent upgrades for future attempts.

Story and Objective
Thorald Olavson’s personal quest drives the narrative: he must track down the Jarl who razed his village, kidnapped his beloved, and escaped across the North Sea. The campaign follows his march through England, with the gods observing his deeds.
Victory is achieved by defeating the Jarl and avenging the loss of home. All battles, sieges, and negotiations serve this single overarching goal, framing each encounter as a step toward that final confrontation.
- Keep the revenge theme in mind when weighing risky assaults versus safer raids.
- Use the story’s focus to decide when to press forward or regroup for more troops.

Map Navigation and Points of Interest
The English map remains open; towns, merchants, and castles stay reachable even after you first pass them. A storm gradually spreads, limiting travel routes, so timing your movements can affect which locations stay accessible.
You may double‑back, skip ahead, or revisit any point of interest when you have enough resources. This flexibility lets you return to an armorer later or attack a castle once your forces have grown.
- Plan early routes to hit high‑value towns before the storm blocks them.
- Revisit earlier merchants after strengthening your warband for better purchases.

Resources, Upgrades, and Construction
Combat yields resources that can be spent on equipment, troop upgrades, and the construction of structures or siege engines. The same pool also funds purchases from merchants, linking battlefield success to strategic growth.
Because funds are limited, allocating them wisely is crucial. Overspending on a single siege may leave you vulnerable later, while saving for upgrades can improve performance in subsequent engagements.
- Balance spending between immediate gear and long‑term troop upgrades.
- Invest in siege engines only when you have a clear target that justifies the cost.

Combat Commands and Formations
During side‑scroll battles you issue orders to your warband, selecting formations such as shield walls, charges, or retreats. Different troop types—archers, berserkers, shaman, shieldmaidens—provide varied tactical options.
Thorald fights alongside his men, so positioning yourself to protect retreats or lead assaults influences the outcome as much as the orders you give. Formations can be changed on the fly to adapt to evolving enemy behavior.
- Match troop types to enemy composition; use shaman for healing in prolonged fights.
- Switch between shield‑wall and charge formations to see which best counters the current threat.

Runestones and Permanent Progression
Odin grants runestones during battles; sacrificing them unlocks warriors and equipment that persist across runs. This system turns each death into a step toward greater strength rather than a total loss.
Permanent unlocks encourage experimentation with different troop mixes and gear, because each new invasion starts with a larger pool of available options.
- Collect runestones early to broaden your permanent unlock pool.
- Prioritize unlocking versatile equipment that benefits multiple playstyles.
