About Social Democracy: An Alternate History
Social Democracy: An Alternate History puts you in the role of the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 1928 to 1934. You must navigate elections, parliamentary maneuvers, and internal party decisions while the Great Depression and political violence threaten the Weimar Republic.
The game uses a card‑based system with dozens of actions and over 70 historical or alternate events. You track unemployment, inflation, and support for the Republic across six demographics, choosing alliances, economic policies, or even militant action to keep the Nazis from seizing power.

Card‑Based Actions
Each turn you play cards that represent party or government actions, such as passing legislation or organizing rallies. The cards interact with the game’s economic and political trackers, influencing public support and party strength.
The deck also includes event cards that trigger historical or alternate scenarios, forcing you to adapt your strategy. Managing the timing and combination of these cards is key to steering the Republic away from fascism.
- Consider saving high‑impact cards for moments when unemployment or inflation spikes.
- Experiment with different event card orders to discover less obvious paths to stability.

Six Demographic Support Tracks
The game monitors support for the Republic among six distinct demographic groups. Changes in unemployment, inflation, or policy decisions affect each group differently, altering overall party backing.
Balancing the needs of these groups can open or close political alliances, such as cooperation with the Communists or the Center, influencing election outcomes.
- Watch which demographics react most strongly to economic cards and adjust your focus accordingly.
- Use demographic shifts to justify coalition choices in parliamentary phases.

Multiple Political Paths
You can pursue a range of strategies: collaborate with leftist parties, adopt radical economic reforms, fund welfare programs, or address Versailles reparations. Each path presents unique challenges and benefits.
If political routes fail, the game offers a militant option, though paramilitary forces may be weak or demoralized, adding risk to that choice.
- Map out the consequences of each path before committing to a major policy card.
- Compare the strength of your paramilitaries against the current political climate before opting for force.

The game includes Steam Cloud support, and it can be played without timed input, offering a relaxed pacing option.
- Use the save‑anytime feature to test different decisions after a critical event.
- Take advantage of the untimed mode to analyze the impact of each card without pressure.
