About Shiner

Shiner is a turn‑based strategy title where each victory teaches you a new enemy attack. You start with a simple punch and may equip up to four learned moves for each encounter. The game features a fully voice‑acted cast and a optional “One‑Punch Mode” for tougher battles.

Developed as a student project at DigiPen, Shiner runs on Windows, supports single‑player, Steam Achievements and Family Sharing, and can be completed in roughly one to two hours.

01 / THE GUIDE

Turn‑Based Combat

Combat proceeds in turns, letting you select from up to four attacks you have learned. Each fight is presented as a puzzle that requires you to match your move set against the opponent’s behavior.

Some opponents have special traits, such as healing each turn or reflecting damage. Choosing the right combination of attacks is essential to overcome these challenges and progress through the zones.

  • Try different attack combos early to see which work best against healing foes.
  • Observe enemy patterns; repeated use of the same move can be punished.

02 / THE GUIDE

Learning Enemy Attacks

When you defeat an enemy, you acquire one of its unique attacks, expanding your personal arsenal. This learning mechanic encourages diversification as you advance.

Even though you collect many attacks, you can only bring four into each fight, forcing careful selection and encouraging revisits to earlier zones to test new combinations.

  • Prioritize learning attacks that complement your existing moves.
  • Re‑visit earlier enemies after unlocking new attacks to see if they become more manageable.

03 / THE GUIDE

Four Battle Zones

The game is divided into four zones, each offering its own set of enemies and visual flavor. You can learn new attacks from the enemies you beat as you battle through the zones.

While the turn‑based framework stays constant, enemy designs vary across zones, keeping the short experience fresh.

  • Complete each zone fully before moving on to ensure a broad attack pool.
  • Notice how enemy personalities influence their attack patterns; this can guide your move selection.

04 / THE GUIDE

"One‑Punch Mode"

If a battle feels overly difficult, you can enable One‑Punch Mode, a built‑in difficulty adjustment intended to help players who become stuck.

Activating the mode does not change the core turn‑based system but provides a more forgiving combat experience.

  • Use One‑Punch Mode as a learning tool to understand enemy behavior before attempting standard difficulty.
  • Disable the mode after a few attempts to test your improved strategy.

05 / THE GUIDE

Voice‑Acted Cast

All characters are fully voice‑acted, giving each personality a distinct audible presence and adding narrative depth to the concise experience.

The cast’s voice lines add personality and flavor to the concise experience.

  • Listen to character lines for hints about their unique attacks.
  • Enjoy the voice work as a complement to the strategic gameplay rather than a core mechanic.
