About Shashingo: Learn Japanese with Photography
Shashingo places you in bright, fictional Japanese streets where you can wander and photograph everyday objects. Each snapshot instantly creates a flash‑card that shows the item’s name in Japanese—displayed in romaji, kana, furigana (recommended) or kanji—and English, turning the scenery into a language lesson.
The game includes a photo album for tracking those flash‑cards, beginner‑level grammar lessons, and memory‑testing game modes. A day/night and weather cycle adds visual variety, while a lo‑fi soundtrack provides a calm backdrop for study sessions.
01 / THE GUIDE
In‑Game Photography
The stylised 3D environment is filled with objects that can be captured with an in‑game camera. When you take a picture, the system automatically generates a unique flash‑card linking the visual to the Japanese term for that object.
Each flash‑card presents the word in the script you have selected—romaji, kana, furigana or kanji—allowing you to see the same concept written in different forms while the image stays constant.
- Try photographing the same object from multiple angles to see how perspective changes without altering the word.
- Switch the script display after each photo to compare how each writing style looks.

Photo Album & Progress Tracking
All flash‑cards are saved in a photo album that acts as a personal study deck. The album separates cards you recall well into a ‘mastered’ tab marked with a gold star, giving a visual cue of confidence.
Cards that are harder to remember receive a purple exclamation‑mark sticker, highlighting them for additional practice and helping you focus on vocabulary that needs reinforcement.
- Periodically review the gold‑star tab to keep strong words fresh in memory.
- Prioritise the purple‑marked cards when you open the album for a focused practice session.

Built‑In Japanese Lessons
At the back of the photo album, the game provides beginner‑level Japanese lessons covering basic phrases and grammar. These lessons reference the vocabulary you have collected, linking theory directly to the images you have captured.
Key words and useful phrases are highlighted within the lessons, giving you practical language tools that can be applied in future conversations beyond the game.
- Read a lesson page after a photography session to connect new words with recent images.
- Write down highlighted phrases in a separate notebook for quick reference.

Memory Test Game Modes
Shashingo includes game modes that test your recall of the photographed vocabulary. In these modes, you are prompted to identify the correct Japanese term for an image you have previously captured, reinforcing memory through active retrieval.
Performance in these modes influences the stickers applied to cards in the album, providing visual feedback on which words are mastered and which need more practice.
- Start with cards that already have a gold star to build confidence before tackling more challenging items.
- The day/night cycle changes the scenery you photograph, so the images you capture can vary in lighting and mood.

Dynamic Environment & Soundtrack
The world cycles through day and night and features weather changes, offering varied backdrops for photography. These visual shifts do not alter gameplay mechanics but provide fresh scenery for each study session.
A lo‑fi soundtrack creates a relaxed atmosphere that complements the study‑focused design of the game.
- Photograph the same spot under different weather conditions to notice subtle visual differences.
- Play the lo‑fi music while reviewing flash‑cards to maintain a steady, focused mood.
