About Root

Root brings the tabletop conflict to a digital woodland, where two to four players compete through factions with different rules. The Marquise de Cat develops an industrial economy, the Eyrie Dynasties attempts to recover its former territory, and the Woodland Alliance organizes rebellion. The Vagabond instead follows an adventurer's path involving items, relationships and quests.

The listing includes Single-player, Multi-player, PvP, Online PvP, Shared/Split Screen PvP, Cross-Platform Multiplayer, Steam Achievements, Steam Turn Notifications, and Family Sharing. It runs on Windows and macOS, and the store page notes partial controller support.

01 / THE GUIDE

Marquise de Cat

The Marquise combines a large army with construction and logistics. Placing a Workshop, Sawmill or Recruiter awards points, with further placements of a particular building type becoming more valuable as its presence grows.

Wood supports that construction program, making the connections and protection of your economy important. The store warns against relying on army size alone: excessive expansion can stretch the Cats beyond what they can maintain. Consider the buildings you want to place alongside the network needed to support them.

  • Consider Sawmill protection as part of maintaining the Wood economy behind construction.
  • Resist overextending the army; a compact, well-defended Wood network scores more reliably than a sprawling one.

02 / THE GUIDE

Eyrie Dynasties

The Eyrie seeks to regain the woodland it once controlled. Building Roosts is central to its scoring: the Evening award depends on how many are present. Territorial expansion therefore has a direct relationship with the faction's point production.

Its leader also commits the faction to a Decree containing mandatory actions. Failing to fulfill the entire sequence during a turn causes turmoil. Leaders offer different strengths, so compare their advantages with the actions your current position can support before planning further growth.

  • Choose leaders whose specialties match your current board position and expansion plans.
  • Grow Roosts at a steady pace so the Decree stays manageable and turmoil is avoided.

03 / THE GUIDE

Woodland Alliance

The Alliance starts gradually and develops its position through sympathy and rebellion. Supporters are needed to spread sympathy, and placing tokens can award points. As the faction's sympathy presence increases, those placements offer greater scoring potential.

Supporters can also contribute to revolts. A successful outbreak of rebellion establishes a base, which enables officer training and strengthens the faction's military options. Consider how to use supporters across these connected priorities rather than treating sympathy and rebellion as unrelated tasks.

  • Build a foundation of early sympathy placements to set up later revolts and bases.
  • Use trained officers from bases to diversify your actions and answer opponent moves.

04 / THE GUIDE

Vagabond

The Vagabond moves through the wider map, including wooded areas outside its clearings, searching for ruins and useful possessions. Trading and helping other factions sit alongside personal quests, creating an adventurer's role within the larger conflict.

Points come from completed quests, improved faction relationships and removing warriors of hostile factions. Actions and movement depend on managing an item pack. Exploring ruins and giving aid provide ways to expand that collection, linking your possessions with the opportunities you pursue.

  • Trade with multiple factions to keep relationship options open for quest completion.
  • Manage the item pack carefully to maximize movement and aid opportunities.

05 / THE GUIDE

Multiplayer Features

Online PvP, shared/split-screen PvP and Cross-Platform Multiplayer appear among the Steam features. Windows and macOS are the operating systems marked as supported on this listing.

The advertised Steam features also include achievements, turn notifications and Family Sharing. Consult those labels when reviewing the platform features available alongside the faction-based game.

  • Enable Steam Turn Notifications to keep track of opponent actions in long online games.
  • Use Family Sharing to let multiple household members try the game through one purchase.

    QUICK ANSWERS

    Root FAQ

How many players can join a single game of Root?

Root supports 2 to 4 players battling for control of the woodland, with each player leading one of the four factions. Online and shared/split screen PvP are listed among the game's features.

What does the Decree do for the Eyrie faction?

The leader's Decree commits the Eyrie to a sequence of mandatory actions. If it cannot complete the full sequence during a turn, the faction enters turmoil.

Can I play Root with a controller?

Partial Controller Support is the label provided by the Steam listing. That is the advertised level of controller support.
