About Roguefort
Roguefort is a turn‑based open‑world roguelike RPG where magic is created through cheesemaking. You play as an affineur exploring a newly generated continent, delving dungeons, taming animals, and crafting recipes that affect combat and healing.
The game also offers Fortress mode, letting you settle a colony, assign settlers to jobs, raise livestock, and trade cheese. It supports single‑player, online co‑op for up to four players, multiple visual styles, and two difficulty options: Permadeath and Wayfarer.

World Exploration
Each run begins with The Crossing, which generates a fresh continent that carries its own history, weather, and ecology. Players can travel across land, sail to coastal cities, and visit the Old Mouth trading hub where other players’ characters appear.
Exploration is tied to ingredient gathering; the region you settle determines which cheeses you can craft, because the land’s flora and fauna supply the raw materials for your magic.
- Map each biome you encounter and note the unique ingredients it provides.
- Compare coastal and inland ingredient pools before choosing a settlement location.

Fortress Mode
In Fortress mode you start a settlement on the generated continent, give settlers specific work, build workshops, and dig underground facilities. Time advances continuously, but you may pause at any moment to plan actions.
Settlers have individual skills, needs, and relationships, and you must keep them fed through the seasons while also preparing defenses against external threats.
- Balance food production with cheese‑making to keep settlers supplied.
- Match settler skills to workshop types for higher efficiency.

Cheese‑Based Magic
Magic in Roguefort is cultivated by crafting cheeses. A smoked gouda recipe creates a fog that blinds enemies, while a sunberry tomme recipe restores health to the caster.
The specific ingredients you collect shape each spell’s effect, so experimenting with different recipes lets you tailor offensive and defensive options to the challenges you face.
- Test a variety of recipes in low‑risk encounters to see which effects suit you.
- Pair an offensive cheese with a defensive one for balanced survivability.

Visual Modes
Roguefort can be played in classic ASCII, pixel art, 2.5D isometric, or first‑person 3D, all powered by the custom Opthalis Engine. Players may switch between these visual styles at any time without restarting.
Each visual mode presents the world differently, so you can choose the aesthetic that best fits your preferences.
- Try each visual mode while navigating a familiar area to see which offers the clearest terrain cues.
- Switch to 3D when managing large settlements to better gauge spatial relationships.

Multiplayer Co‑op
Up to four players can share a single world online, exploring, building, raiding dungeons, sailing, and completing quests together. The mode is listed as Online Co‑op.
Even when playing solo, you can visit the Old Mouth hub to trade, chat, and send in‑game mail with other players, extending interaction beyond the core co‑op sessions.
- Assign each teammate a primary focus—combat, settlement, exploration, or trade—to cover all aspects of the game.
- Use the trading hub to exchange surplus cheese for resources you lack in your colony.
