About Rogue
Rogue, first released in the early 1980s, introduced randomly generated rooms and permanent death, creating a new style of fantasy dungeon crawling. This Epyx‑distributed version, v1.49 for MSDOS on IBM PC, brings the classic challenge to modern Windows systems.
Players descend 26 ever‑more dangerous levels, battling unique enemies, gathering armor, weapons, food, and magical items while hunting the Amulet of Yendor and seeking an escape from the Dungeons of Doom.

Random Level Generation
Each playthrough creates a fresh layout of rooms, ensuring no two journeys are identical. The algorithm places secret doors and traps unpredictably, demanding careful exploration. The 26 levels increase in difficulty, with each new floor presenting more complex room arrangements and hazards, reinforcing the game's replay value.
- Observe patterns in trap placement to anticipate hazards.
- Map discovered rooms mentally to avoid backtracking.

Permadeath and Risk
Rogue employs permanent death, meaning a single defeat ends the current adventure. This high stakes design encourages cautious play and strategic resource management. Because death is final, every decision—whether to engage an enemy or explore a hidden door—carries weight, amplifying tension throughout the quest.
- Conserve food to maintain health longer.
- Weigh the risk of unknown doors against current supplies.

Items and Magic
Players can collect armor, weapons, food, and a variety of magical spells and potions. Each item offers distinct effects that can turn the tide of combat or aid survival. Spells and potions have “different wondrous effects every time you play,” adding variety to each encounter and encouraging experimentation.
- Test potions on low‑risk enemies first.
- Balance offensive weapons with defensive armor.

Enemy Variety
Dozens of unique and powerful enemies populate the dungeon, each requiring different tactics. Their placement is randomized, so encounters differ between runs. Understanding enemy behavior through observation can help you decide when to fight or flee, especially in deeper levels where threats intensify.
- Watch enemy movement before attacking.
- Retreat when outnumbered to preserve resources.

Objective and Escape
The primary goal is to locate the Amulet of Yendor somewhere within the 26 levels. Once obtained, the player must find a way out, completing the adventure. Escaping after acquiring the amulet is a separate challenge, as the final floors become increasingly treacherous, testing the player’s accumulated gear and strategy.
- Prioritize the amulet once spotted.
- Maintain a reserve of food for the final escape.
