About Returnal
Returnal™ on PC delivers a third‑person roguelike shooter where each death restarts the cycle, reshaping the world and item pool. Selene’s relentless bullet‑hell combat is paired with procedural environments that evolve each loop, encouraging fresh strategies every run. The game includes the full experience—single‑player, co‑op, Photo Mode, Suspend Cycle, and the Tower of Sisyphus—plus extensive visual, audio, and accessibility settings for a tailored playthrough.
Designed for extreme replayability, Returnal offers five graphical presets, performance metrics, and support for ray‑traced lighting, DLSS, NIS, and FSR. Players can choose DualSense haptics, mouse‑keyboard, or other controllers, and benefit from Dolby Atmos and 3D audio options. Co‑op lets two players share a cycle, while the Tower provides an endless combat gauntlet separate from the main adventure.
01 / THE GUIDE
Core Roguelike Loop
Selene crash‑lands on a shape‑shifting world and must search an ancient barren landscape for escape. Each death forces a restart, reshuffling items and encouraging new combat approaches. The procedural world changes with every cycle, offering fresh combinations of gear and challenges.
The loop emphasizes fast, relentless gameplay where players must manage equipment and resources, knowing that each defeat returns them to the beginning. This design drives replayability and rewards adaptation to evolving threats.
- Observe how item placements shift after each death to discover new synergies.
- Take note of environmental cues that hint at upcoming enemy patterns.

Visual & Performance Options
The PC version includes five graphical presets, an FPS counter, GPU/CPU usage gauge, and latency tracker. Players can enable ray‑traced reflections and shadows, then adjust them via sliders. Technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA NIS, and AMD FSR are available for performance tuning.
Aspect ratios up to 32:9 expand the field of view, and 4K resolution is supported. These settings let users balance visual fidelity with smooth frame rates according to their hardware capabilities.
- Start with a preset and tweak individual sliders to find a stable frame rate.
- Try wider aspect ratios for a broader view of combat encounters.

Audio & Accessibility
Returnal supports Dolby Atmos and selectable 3D audio modes, delivering precise sound placement that aids reaction time. An alt‑fire crosshair charging notification and a Co‑op ping system improve situational awareness. Accessibility options also cover adjustable text size, color alternatives, and custom volume controls.
These features are designed to accommodate diverse player needs, ensuring that both visual and auditory information can be tailored for comfort and clarity during intense combat.
- Enable the 3D audio mode with headphones to locate enemies more accurately.
- Adjust text size and color settings if on‑screen information feels crowded.
04 / THE GUIDE
Co‑op Mode
Co‑op lets a second PC player join the shifting labyrinth of Atropos, each controlling a different version of Selene from another cycle. The host summons a friend via the Chronosis device, and the host’s progress determines the item pool for the session.
While the hostile environment remains unchanged, teamwork adds a new dimension to survival. Note that Tower of Sisyphus, House sequences, and Challenge Mode are unavailable in Co‑op, and cross‑play with PS5 is not supported.
- Coordinate item usage early, as the host’s item pool sets the limits for the session.
- Communicate via the ping system to share enemy locations quickly.
05 / THE GUIDE
Tower of Sisyphus
The Tower becomes accessible after unlocking the Icarian Grapnel at the crash site. It is a nearly endless ascending gauntlet focused on combat, score building, and exclusive items. Players also encounter Scout logs and story fragments while climbing.
The Tower, House sequences, and Challenge Mode are excluded from Co‑op sessions, making it a solo challenge that tests endurance and skill beyond the main roguelike loop.
- Practice movement patterns in the main game before tackling the Tower’s relentless pace.
- Collect Scout logs for additional narrative context while climbing.
