About Research Story
Research Story places you in Shimmerbrook, where the Violet Archive records new flora, fauna, and fish. You travel the surrounding area, locate specimens, and add them to the Archive’s catalog of over ninety entries.
The game blends farming, creature care, mining, puzzle solving, cooking, crafting, and social interaction. Features include single‑player play, full controller support, Steam Cloud saves, and the ability to romance ten characters.
01 / THE GUIDE
Research and Discovery
The main activity is exploring Shimmerbrook’s locations to find exotic plants, creatures, and fish. Each find is recorded in the Archive, contributing toward the goal of documenting more than ninety distinct entries.
Seeds gathered from wild plants can be cultivated under specific growth conditions, turning observation into a farming loop. Fishing also requires matching bait and fish parts to catch unique species, expanding the research list.
- Compare the growth requirements of similar plants to reduce the number of separate setups you need.
- Test different bait types when targeting rare fish to see which yields the most new entries.

Creature Taming and Perks
Players can tame thirty‑two unique creatures after learning each animal’s preferred food. Taming is part of the research loop, turning wild encounters into domestic helpers.
Raised creatures provide distinct abilities—chickens locate seeds, Sproutkittens instantly grow sprouts—allowing them to assist with farming, foraging, or other tasks once their needs are met.
- Observe a creature’s diet before offering food to increase taming success.
- Choose creatures whose abilities match the tasks you are focusing on at the moment.

Mines and Puzzle Caves
The Mines provide ores and gems, and host plants and creatures that appear only there. Mining expands your resource pool while adding new entries to the Archive.
Puzzle caves can be explored, and solving each puzzle yields an Artifact that moves the story forward toward the mystery of Shimmerbrook’s rapid ecological growth.
- Carry a mix of tools to handle both ore extraction and puzzle interaction.
- Keep a list of collected Artifacts to avoid revisiting solved puzzles unnecessarily.

Cooking, Crafting, and Automation
Meals can be cooked to grant buffs, supporting longer foraging trips or more efficient farming.
Crafting lets you build sprinklers, auto‑feeders, and other automation tools that handle routine tasks, letting you focus on research and exploration.
- Try different meals to see which buffs best suit the activity you plan next.
- Place sprinklers near high‑yield crops to keep them watered without manual effort.

Townfolk, Events, and Romance
Shimmerbrook’s residents include a mountain druid and a featherfolk newcomer. Befriending townsfolk and scheduling Hangout Events reveals personal stories that enrich the world’s lore.
Ten characters are romanceable; developing a relationship can lead to marriage, adding a personal narrative layer to the research‑focused gameplay.
- Attend Hangout Events when you have free time to learn more about each character’s background.
- Note each romanceable’s preferences to progress relationships steadily.
