About Red Matter
Red Matter places you in the role of Agent Epsilon, an Atlantic Union astronaut sent to a deserted Volgravian research base on Saturn’s moon Rhea. The game is a story‑driven VR puzzle adventure set in a dystopian Cold War where every room, object and document may contain a fragment of the truth.
Exploration occurs in brutalist corridors, underground labs and the moon’s hostile surface while motion controllers let you scan, translate, repair and manipulate objects directly. Observation and curiosity are rewarded as deeper investigation reveals increasingly unsettling details.
01 / THE GUIDE
Story and Setting
Agent Epsilon’s covert recovery mission quickly becomes strange as the abandoned facility on Rhea reveals propaganda, personal belongings and research records. Each discovered item adds layers to the mystery, encouraging players to piece together what happened to the vanished crew.
The environment itself tells the story; isolation, surveillance and hints of a catastrophic event create tension. As you progress, every clue raises new questions, reinforcing the game’s theme that truth is hidden beneath layers of observation.
- Read each document fully; many contain contextual hints for later puzzles.
- Compare propaganda posters with personal items to spot narrative contradictions.

VR Interaction
Motion controllers act as multifunctional tools for grabbing, scanning, translating and illuminating objects. Players can turn dials, pull switches and operate unfamiliar machinery directly with their hands, making each puzzle feel integrated with the world.
Movement options include smooth locomotion, teleport and dash, allowing players to choose how they traverse the facility while staying fully immersed in VR.
- Experiment with each locomotion mode in the same hallway to gauge comfort.
- Use the scanning function on objects that appear out of place.

Puzzle Design
Puzzles are built into the facility itself, requiring you to repair circuits, operate machinery and decode information. Solving a puzzle often unlocks new areas or reveals additional story elements.
Physical interaction is central; you must turn dials, pull levers and connect components by hand, encouraging careful observation of visual cues before taking action.
- Observe the current state of machinery before interacting; it may indicate the needed action.
- Look for glowing panels or other visual markers that suggest power flow.

Visuals and Atmosphere
Red Matter features detailed environments with upgraded 4K textures, rich materials and atmospheric lighting that bring its retro‑future world to life. Brutalist corridors and secret laboratories feel oppressive, reinforcing the sense of isolation.
Lighting and ambient audio work together to create tension, while the hostile surface of Rhea adds an extra layer of unease as you descend into the base.
- Pause briefly when entering a new area to absorb visual and audio details.
- Notice how texture quality changes between corridors and laboratories for environmental cues.

Platform Features
Red Matter is a VR‑only title that supports tracked controllers, Steam achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. It runs on Windows and does not support macOS or Linux.
These features allow progress to be stored in the cloud and enable the game to be launched from a shared library, while achievements record milestones within the single‑player experience.
- Ensure Steam Cloud is enabled in the client to use its cloud storage support.
- Check the achievements list for optional goals that encourage thorough exploration.
