About Railroads Online
Railroads Online drops you into a vast, open‑world inspired by the golden age of steam in America. As a pioneer railroad tycoon you lay tracks, build stations and yards, and haul timber, ore, coal, cattle, gold and other freight across four large maps. The game blends detailed locomotive simulation—complete with regulators, valves, brakes and couplers—with a sandbox building experience. You can play solo or join up to fifteen friends in cooperative online sessions, saving and reloading your creations for endless replay.
01 / THE GUIDE
Open World Exploration
The game features four expansive maps—Lake Valley, Aurora Falls, Pine Valley and Mesa Plains—each offering varied terrain for scouting routes. Players can traverse the landscape in steam locomotives to find optimal paths for their rail network.
Exploration is tied to the business goal: discovering routes that connect resource sites to industries, allowing profitable freight deliveries. The world can be revisited thanks to a save‑load system.
- Scout multiple routes before committing to track placement to avoid costly redesigns.
- Use the first‑person view to better gauge terrain gradients and bridge needs.

Track Construction
Players design rail networks by placing tracks, bridges, switches, turntables and other infrastructure. After laying track, additional buildings such as stations and yards can be added to service trains.
Construction tools let you shape embankments and lay down various rail components, enabling complex layouts that support multiple trains and freight types.
- Plan station placement near resource nodes to reduce travel distance for freight.
- Incorporate turntables for flexible locomotive direction changes.

Locomotive Simulation
Steam locomotives are rendered with detailed models and interactive controls such as regulators, valves, brakes and couplers. The Unreal Engine 5 physics system simulates real‑time forces and collisions, making derailments possible.
Players can customize and upgrade locomotives, then operate them in first‑person view to deliver freight, adding a realistic driving challenge to the sandbox.
- Monitor brake pressure on steep grades to prevent derailments.
- Adjust regulator settings to balance speed and fuel consumption.

Freight Management
The core economic loop involves transporting goods—timber, ore, coal, cattle, gold and other items—to earn money. Successful shipments fund new locomotives, upgrades and additional infrastructure.
A variety of industries request different cargo types, encouraging players to diversify routes and expand their rail empire.
- Prioritize high‑value cargo like gold for quicker capital growth.
- Balance multiple freight types to keep all stations active.

Multiplayer Co‑op
Railroads Online supports online cooperative play for up to sixteen players (you plus fifteen friends). Teams can lay tracks together, share construction duties, or operate trains independently on the same server.
Progress can be saved and loaded, allowing groups to revisit successful layouts or improve upon previous designs.
- Assign specific roles—track building, station management, train operation—to streamline teamwork.
- Communicate route plans early to avoid overlapping construction.
