About R.U.S.E.

R.U.S.E.™ Definitive Edition brings the original real‑time strategy title together with all DLC and Steam Deck support. Set in World War II, the game uses the IRISZOOM® engine to let players zoom from individual units to a board‑game‑style overview, emphasizing bluffing and perception. Players command one of several historic factions, employ RUSE cards to deceive opponents, and can compete in single‑player campaigns, skirmishes, or multiplayer matches for up to eight players.

01 / THE GUIDE

Single‑Player Campaign

The campaign follows Major Joe Sheridan across deserts, Europe and more, mixing strategy with a narrative that includes plot twists. Each mission blends unit management, storytelling and the use of RUSE cards to outwit AI opponents. Campaign missions provide a structured way to learn faction strengths and the impact of deception while progressing through varied WWII locations.

  • Experiment with different RUSE cards early to discover how they affect AI behavior.
  • Pay attention to mission objectives; they often reward creative use of deception.

02 / THE GUIDE

Multiplayer Game Modes

R.U.S.E. supports 2‑8 player matches on customizable WWII‑themed maps, offering classic, total war, nuclear, and ranked modes. Players select map, mode and team setup, then compete using the same RUSE mechanics as in single‑player. Each mode changes unit availability or victory goals, such as racing to build a nuclear artillery in Nuclear Mode or unlocking new units across three phases in Total War.

  • In Nuclear Mode, prioritize early resource gathering to outpace opponents.
  • Use ranked matches to gauge your bluffing skill against global players.

03 / THE GUIDE

RUSE Card System

RUSE cards are special abilities that can be activated at any time to alter enemy perception, conceal forces, create decoys, or change unit behavior. They fall into four categories: reveal information, conceal information, create decoys, and alter unit behavior. Combining cards lets players craft layered strategies, turning each engagement into a psychological duel rather than pure firepower.

  • Mix conceal and decoy cards to mask real attacks.
  • Use reveal cards sparingly to gain critical intel without exposing your own plans.

04 / THE GUIDE

Playable Factions

Six WWII powers are available, each with distinct units and playstyles: United States (versatile, industrial), Germany (quality, firepower), France (defensive), United Kingdom (air power, artillery), USSR (quantity, durability), Italy (speed, mobility). Choosing a faction shapes strategic options and influences how RUSE cards are best employed. Understanding each faction’s strengths helps tailor bluffing tactics to complement inherent unit capabilities.

  • Select a faction whose strengths align with your preferred bluffing style.
  • Experiment with different factions in skirmish mode to learn their unique units.

05 / THE GUIDE

Victory Conditions

A match ends when a player destroys all enemy bases and units, or when the time limit expires and the player with the higher point total wins. Points are awarded for each enemy unit destroyed, encouraging aggressive yet tactical play. Both destruction and point accumulation provide alternative paths to victory, allowing players to adapt strategies mid‑battle.

  • Balance unit loss with point gain; sometimes preserving forces yields higher scores.
  • Track the timer and adjust aggression as the match nears its end.
