About Quake II
Quake II, released by id Software in 1997, moves the series into a military‑science‑fiction setting where humanity battles the alien Strogg. The bundled package offers the untouched Original version alongside an Enhanced edition that upgrades visuals, lighting, models, enemy animations, AI behavior and audio while preserving the core campaign and multiplayer structure.
The collection also includes the two classic mission packs—The Reckoning and Ground Zero—plus the new Call of the Machine expansion. Multiplayer supports online, split‑screen and cross‑platform play for up to sixteen players, with cooperative modes for up to four and bot opponents for offline matches.
01 / THE GUIDE
Original Quake II Campaign
The base campaign follows survivors of a failed strike on the Strogg homeworld as they fight through fortified installations to cripple the alien war machine and decide humanity’s fate. It is presented as a single‑player experience that can be saved at any time.
In the Original version the game retains its classic models, lighting, and the heavy‑rock soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem, delivering the authentic look and sound that long‑time fans recognize.
- Observe how enemy placement and level geometry stay consistent across both visual versions.
- Listen for the soundtrack’s impact on tension during high‑intensity combat sections.

Enhanced Visuals, Audio and AI
The Enhanced edition adds up to 4K resolution, widescreen support, dynamic colored lighting, anti‑aliasing, depth of field, and improved enemy animations and gore. Cinematics are also refined and the Sonic Mayhem soundtrack remains integral.
Beyond visual upgrades, the Enhanced version restores and improves AI behaviors, meaning enemy tactics differ from the Original while level design and objectives stay unchanged.
- Toggle between Original and Enhanced modes to compare enemy reaction patterns.
- Use higher resolution settings on large monitors to better spot distant foes.

The Reckoning and Ground Zero Packs
The Reckoning adds 18 campaign levels and 7 deathmatch maps, sending players through industrial sites, waterways, canyons and an alien spacecraft to destroy a secret moon base. Ground Zero contributes 15 campaign levels and 14 deathmatch maps, focusing on a surface assault to disable the Strogg Gravity Well.
Both packs expand the single‑player narrative and provide additional multiplayer arenas while preserving the same core mechanics as the base game.
- Play the packs in release order to follow the storyline from infiltration to surface assault.
- Test each new deathmatch map for balance differences compared to the original maps.

Call of the Machine Expansion
Developed by MachineGames, this expansion adds 28 campaign levels and one multiplayer deathmatch map. The story centers on a singularity called the Machine that threatens reality, leading players through time‑bending environments to confront the Strogg‑Maker.
The expansion is part of the Enhanced version's all-new campaign content, alongside the package's cross‑platform multiplayer and controller support.
- Notice how the new levels' time‑ and space‑spanning environments differ from earlier packs.
- Compare the single new multiplayer map’s layout with classic maps to gauge design evolution.

Online, Local and Cross‑Platform Multiplayer
Quake II supports online PvP for up to sixteen players, split‑screen local play for up to four (or eight on PC), and cooperative modes for up to four participants. Bot opponents are available for offline deathmatch and team‑deathmatch matches.
Cross‑play works across PC (controller‑enabled), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch, allowing friends on different systems to compete or cooperate together.
