About ProtoCorgi
ProtoCorgi is a retro‑style pixel‑art horizontal shoot‑‘em‑up starring Bullet, a cybernetic corgi. Players fly through waves of enemies, massive bosses and obstacles while shooting, dodging and using a unique “bark” attack. The game offers an adjustable difficulty range from “Pup” to “Ultra Nightmare” and supports up to 27 weapon combinations plus three hidden special abilities.
Beyond the core campaign, ProtoCorgi includes a level‑editor called ProtoCorgi Maker, online leaderboards, multiple endings and a suite of mutators that alter gameplay rules. Full controller support, Steam Cloud and single‑player modes round out the feature set for a flexible, arcade‑focused experience.
01 / THE GUIDE
Gameplay Basics
The core loop has players steering Bullet across a horizontal scrolling field, firing at enemy formations and avoiding hazards. Shooting, dodging and the “hyper bark” attack are the primary actions, with the bark growing in power when it contacts certain objects.
The visual style is pixel‑art and the soundtrack is described as award‑winning, reinforcing the retro arcade feel. The game is single‑player and runs on Windows and Linux via Steam.
- Observe how the bark enlarges after hitting chest or fruit objects to maximize damage.
- Practice timing of dodges early to handle the denser enemy patterns in later stages.

Difficulty Settings
ProtoCorgi provides nine difficulty levels that change level design rather than just numeric values, ranging from the beginner‑friendly “Pup” to the extreme “Ultra Nightmare”. Each level reshapes enemy placement and obstacle patterns.
These difficulties reshape the main campaign's level design, so layouts can differ noticeably between tiers.
- Start on a lower difficulty to learn enemy patterns before attempting higher tiers.
- Compare how level layouts differ between “Pup” and “Ultra Nightmare” to gauge difficulty impact.

Weapon & Ability System
Players can equip up to 27 weapon combinations and unlock three hidden special abilities, expanding Bullet’s combat options beyond standard fire. The cybernetic corgi also has three massive attacks for clearing groups of foes.
The “hyper bark” mechanic grows in size and power when it hits specific items, adding a layer of strategic weapon use alongside conventional shooting.
- Experiment with different weapon combos to find a style that complements the hyper bark.
- Try the massive attacks in boss encounters for quick health preservation.

ProtoCorgi Maker (Level Editor)
ProtoCorgi Maker lets players create, share and play custom levels online. The editor is integrated with leaderboards, allowing community‑made stages to be ranked alongside the official campaign.
Created levels are also compatible with the Caravan time‑limit mode, adding a pacing option for custom stages.
- Test your level with different mutators to ensure balanced difficulty.
- Upload finished stages to the online leaderboard for community feedback.

Mutators and Additional Modes
The game includes several mutators that change core rules, such as Pacifist Mode, which disables damaging abilities, and Caravan Mode, which adds a time limit to any level type. These can be applied to campaign, training or custom stages.
Additional modes like Training, Sound Test and customizable bark/hats provide extra ways to practice or personalize the experience without affecting core progression.
- Use Pacifist Mode to practice movement and evasion without relying on attacks.
- Combine Caravan Mode with a custom level for a speed‑run challenge.
