About Prose & Codes
Prose & Codes lets players practice the classic substitution cipher by decoding more than 400 hand‑selected excerpts from literature. The puzzles cover eight genres, from nostalgic children’s stories to bone‑chilling horror, and play alongside a soothing piano soundtrack.
All decoded books are free to read and download, and 10 % of each sale supports Project Gutenberg’s library of over 60 000 free e‑books. Dark mode, enlarged cipher text and adjustable difficulty keep the experience comfortable for any player.
01 / THE GUIDE
Substitution Cipher Puzzles
The core mechanic is a substitution cipher: each symbol in the grid must be replaced with its plain‑text letter to reveal the hidden excerpt. No timed input is required, allowing players to work at their own pace.
When a puzzle is solved, the original literary passage appears, letting players compare the decoded version with the source text and verify their solution.
- Start by mapping the most frequent symbols to common letters such as E or T.
- Keep a simple notebook of confirmed letter mappings for reference across puzzles.

Classic Literature Content
Over 400 excerpts are drawn from both well‑known and obscure classic works, providing a range of tones and subjects. Some passages contain non‑graphic references to sex, violence, or alcohol.
After solving a puzzle, the full excerpt becomes readable and downloadable, allowing players to explore the complete literary piece beyond the cipher.
- Note the genre label; it can hint at vocabulary that may appear in the cipher.
- Use the free download to read surrounding context if the excerpt feels isolated.

Adjustable Difficulty
The game includes an Adjustable Difficulty feature, letting players select a challenge level that matches their familiarity with substitution ciphers. The game offers four difficulty settings to choose from.
Players can choose between four difficulty settings, so they may experiment with harder puzzles after mastering easier ones.
- Begin on the easiest setting to learn substitution patterns before moving up.
- Switch to a higher difficulty after a few successful solves to keep the challenge fresh.
