About Pawnbarian
Pawnbarian is a turn‑based puzzle roguelike that mixes chess‑style movement with a card‑driven combat system. Each run places a hero on a compact dungeon board, where playing chess‑piece cards lets you move, attack, and outmaneuver enemies that have their own abilities.
The game offers six characters, three distinct dungeons, and an endless post‑run Gauntlet. Difficulty can be increased through Chains—optional modifiers that add new constraints. All content is single‑player and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with full controller support and Steam Cloud.
01 / THE GUIDE
Turn‑Based Puzzle Combat
On each turn you play a card that moves your hero like a chess piece across a tiny board. Enemy cards act on their own turns, using a variety of abilities that create emergent tactical situations requiring precise positioning.
Because the board is small, every move has immediate consequences, and success depends on anticipating enemy actions and using the board’s geometry to your advantage.
- Observe an enemy’s card ability before you commit to a move; this often reveals safe squares.
- Treat each encounter as a self‑contained puzzle rather than a grind for resources.

Card Deck and Upgrades
Your deck consists of chess‑piece cards that dictate movement and attacks. Treasure collected during a run can be spent to upgrade these cards, adding extra powers that broaden tactical options.
Upgrades are applied using the treasure you earn, meaning the strength of your deck can evolve within a single run based on the loot you find.
- Spend treasure on upgrades that complement the movement style of your chosen character.
- Try different upgrade combinations across runs to discover which powers mesh best with your playstyle.

Run Length and Gauntlet Mode
Standard runs are designed to be quick, typically lasting fifteen to thirty minutes, allowing you to complete a full dungeon in a short session. After finishing a dungeon you may enter the infinite post‑run Gauntlet.
The Gauntlet continues until your hero dies, turning the experience into a survival challenge that tests how long you can survive.
- Use the Gauntlet to practice a specific upgrade strategy without the pressure of a final boss.
- Treat Gauntlet scores as a personal benchmark for measuring improvement over time.

Characters and Dungeon Variety
Six distinct characters are available, each requiring a unique approach. This forces a different tactical approach for each hero when tackling the three dungeons.
Each of the three dungeons requires its own approach, so the same character will feel different across locations, encouraging replay without additional unlocks.
- Experiment with all six characters to find the movement style that feels most natural to you.
- Switch dungeons after mastering a character to keep the puzzles fresh.

Chains – Extra Difficulty Modifiers
Chains are extra difficulty modifiers that raise the challenge of each run. Progressing through them changes the puzzle you face.
Chains form a series of modifiers, letting you push the challenge level higher as you progress.
- Start with a single Chain to gauge its impact before stacking several.
- Progress to tougher Chains once earlier modifiers feel manageable, for varied challenges.
