About Papers, Please
Papers, Please places you at the Grestin Border Checkpoint after a six‑year war, where the Arstotzkan government has reclaimed its side of the town. You are assigned as an immigration inspector, living in a Class‑8 dwelling with your family.
Your duty is to examine each traveler’s documents using the Ministry’s primitive inspection, search, and fingerprint systems, deciding who may cross into Arstotzka and who must be denied or arrested.

Setting and Story
The game is set in the communist state of Arstotzka, which has just ended a six‑year war with Kolechia and retaken its half of Grestin. Your character has been selected by a labor lottery and assigned to the Ministry of Admission’s border checkpoint. The narrative introduces a variety of entrants—workers, refugees, smugglers, spies, and terrorists—each seeking entry for their own reasons, creating a tense atmosphere of suspicion and duty.
- Pay attention to the political backdrop; it informs why certain documents may be suspicious.
- Remember that the story frames each decision as a matter of national security.

Core Gameplay Objective
Your primary objective is to control the flow of people entering Arstotzka from Kolechia. Using only the documents provided, you must decide who can enter, who is turned away, and who is arrested. Success is measured by how accurately you apply the inspection rules while maintaining the checkpoint’s operational needs.
- Balance thoroughness with speed; the game tracks both accuracy and efficiency.
- Keep an eye on the evolving list of required documents.

Inspection, Search, and Fingerprint Systems
The Ministry provides three primitive tools: an inspection system for reading documents, a search system for scanning belongings, and a fingerprint system for verifying identities. These are the only resources you may use to evaluate each traveler. Each tool offers limited information, requiring you to cross‑reference details such as dates, seals, and signatures to spot inconsistencies.
- Use the fingerprint system to confirm that a passport matches its holder.
- When in doubt, run a quick search of the traveler’s bag for hidden items.
