About Outcast 1.1
Outcast 1.1 is an updated release of the 1999 action‑adventure title that originally showcased software voxel rendering and non‑linear, free‑roaming gameplay. The game follows former Navy SEAL Cutter Slade as he journeys to an alien world to retrieve a damaged probe and prevent a black‑hole threat to Earth.
The new version runs on modern PCs with a multithreaded voxel renderer, higher‑resolution sky paintings, and a redesigned HUD for larger displays. It also adds native Xbox gamepad support, a fresh launcher, and numerous bug fixes, bringing the cult classic to the Steam community.

Story premise
In 2007 the U.S. government launches a probe to an alien world in a parallel universe. An alien life form damages the probe, causing a backlash of energy that creates a black hole threatening Earth.
Cutter Slade, a former Navy SEAL, escorts three scientists to the alien world. After being separated, the natives hail him as their messiah, called the Ulukai, setting the stage for the adventure.
- Observe how the narrative frames Cutter as both soldier and reluctant hero.
- Compare the alien world’s crisis to classic sci‑fi rescue missions.

Voxel rendering technology
Outcast originally used software voxel rendering to create its 3‑D environments. The 1.1 update recompiles the original code and adds a multithreaded voxel renderer, improving performance on current hardware.
The rendering remains software‑based, but the multithreading allows smoother navigation of the free‑roaming worlds while preserving the game’s distinctive visual style.
- Notice the performance boost when moving through dense terrain.
- Contrast the voxel approach with modern polygon‑heavy engines.

HUD and high‑resolution assets
The heads‑up display has been partially redesigned to suit higher screen resolutions, ensuring UI elements remain clear on modern monitors. New high‑resolution sky paintings replace the original textures, enhancing visual depth.
These updates keep the classic interface functional while adapting to contemporary display standards, without altering core gameplay mechanics.
- Check the HUD clarity at different window sizes.
- Appreciate the sky artwork as a visual upgrade.

Partial controller support
Outcast 1.1 includes native support for an Xbox gamepad and provides a user‑friendly controller configuration menu. This allows players to map actions to the controller, though the game remains primarily a PC title.
The support is labeled as partial, indicating that not all functions may be reachable via controller alone, but the option exists for those who prefer it.
- Experiment with the configuration menu to find comfortable button layouts.
- Use the controller for movement and basic actions, then switch to mouse for precise aiming if needed.
