About Ostranauts
Ostranauts drops you into a solar system isolated from a ruined Earth. You begin as a scrapper seeking independence, juggling finances, crew, and a ship built from scavenged parts while the universe remembers every decision you make.
The game mixes RPG storytelling with simulation depth: character backgrounds shape dialogue, ship construction alters Newtonian flight feel, and AI‑driven crew members have physical and emotional needs. It is a single‑player title with full controller support and Steam Workshop modding.
01 / THE GUIDE
Career Kiosk and Character Creation
During character creation you use the Career Kiosk to choose a background, income level, and qualifications. Those selections set your traits and skillset, which later affect ship management and interactions with other characters.
Early choices also seed enemies, ex‑lovers, and acquaintances that may appear later, and they shape the conversation options you will encounter throughout the game.
- Pick a background that grants negotiation traits if you plan to rely on crew recruitment.
- Select an income level that matches your intended early‑game financial pressure.
02 / THE GUIDE
Ship Building and Parts
You construct your ship from the ground up using detailed, functional parts. Scavenged “pre‑loved” components from the boneyard are cheaper than brand‑new ones, letting you upgrade hull, thrusters, and fuel systems affordably.
Replacing worn parts is necessary as you travel, and each component influences the ship’s mass, power, and overall flight feel.
- Prioritise thrusters early if you prefer a more responsive flight feel.
- Watch fuel capacity when adding heavy hull upgrades.

Newtonian Flight Mechanics
Piloting follows Newtonian physics; you must manage control panels, flip switches, and avoid impulsive actions like hitting the big red button. Each ship’s thrusters, hull mass, and customisation give it a distinct flight feel.
Docking requires a light touch, and you must monitor fuel gauges to avoid being stranded on the outer rim.
- Practice gentle thrust adjustments to master docking.
- Check fuel levels before long jumps.

AI‑Driven Crew Needs
Every character runs an AI that reacts based on current physiological and emotional needs, from basic food and oxygen to deeper desires such as intimacy and security. Your background influences how well you can persuade or comfort them.
Managing these needs is part of keeping a functional crew and can affect whether characters agree to join your ship.
- Track basic supplies like food and oxygen alongside any deeper needs.
- Use dialogue options that align with your character’s strengths.

Modding and Community Support
Most game data is stored in plain‑text files, allowing modders to edit a wide variety of content. Blue Bottle Games encourages players to share ideas on Discord and contribute to the Steam Workshop.
This openness lets the community expand lore, add new parts, or tweak mechanics, keeping the experience fresh beyond the base game.
- Back up original text files before making changes.
- Browse the Steam Workshop for ready‑made mods that suit your playstyle.
