About Orcs Must Die! Unchained

Orcs Must Die! Unchained builds on the series’ action‑tower‑defense foundation by adding three‑player cooperative play. The story takes place years after Orcs Must Die! 2, when the Order’s leaders Maximillian and Gabriella confront a new foe called the Unchained—an organized army led by its own heroes. Players defend magical rifts against waves of orcs and other monsters by placing and upgrading a variety of traps that can hack, grind, flatten, gibletize, or incinerate enemies. A roster of returning and new heroes, each with distinct abilities, lets teams tailor their defensive strategy. In addition to the classic Survival and Endless modes, the title introduces a competitive Sabotage mode where two teams of three simultaneously defend their own rift while sending spells, minions, and bosses into the opponent’s dimension to steal points. Weekly Challenges and Daily Quests provide extra traps and upgrade parts, encouraging regular play. The game runs on Windows, offers partial controller support, Steam achievements, in‑app purchases, and family sharing, giving players options for solo or group sessions.

01 / THE GUIDE

Core Gameplay

The core loop mixes trap placement with real‑time combat. Players construct a gauntlet of devices that can hack, grind, flatten, gibletize, or incinerate enemies before they reach the rift. Traps can be unlocked and later upgraded for greater lethality, letting teams customize a defensive strategy for each battle.

Success depends on timing, positioning, and coordinating hero abilities with trap effects. Layering elemental and physics‑based interactions can create chain reactions that wipe out waves of orcs.

  • Experiment with trap combos that trigger elemental reactions for higher damage.
  • Upgrade frequently used traps first, as the game lets players unlock traps and then upgrade them to be even deadlier.

Hero Roster

A wide variety of unique and powerful heroes provide distinct abilities that can be combined with traps for creative defenses. Returning characters Max and Gabriella join newcomers such as Blackpaw, Hogarth, Stinkeye, and Bloodspike.

The roster supports different playstyles, whether a player prefers raw power, magical spells, or mischievous tactics.

  • Experiment with different hero abilities alongside traps, as heroes offer a plethora of creative ways to stop orcs.
  • Try various heroes on the same map to discover unexpected interactions.

Game Modes

Survival mode offers three‑player co‑op defense where teams climb leaderboards by surviving waves. Endless mode returns with expanded 3‑player co‑op, and Weekly Challenges and Daily Quests provide extra traps and upgrade parts.

Sabotage is a new competitive mode: two teams of three defend their rift while simultaneously sending spells, minions, and bosses into the opponent’s dimension to steal points.

  • In Sabotage, use spells, minions, or bosses early to challenge the opponent’s defenses, as the mode lets teams troll each other with such elements.
  • Complete Daily Quests to obtain specific traps that can strengthen your Survival strategy.

Progression & Rewards

Players unlock new traps by playing, then upgrade them for increased damage. Weekly Challenges and Daily Quests grant additional traps and upgrade parts, encouraging regular play.

Progression is tied to both co‑op and solo activities, allowing players to improve their defensive arsenal over time.

  • Focus on challenges that reward the trap types you use most often.
  • Upgrade parts as you acquire them to improve trap strength, matching the game's increasing wave difficulty.
