About OpenFront

OpenFront is a massively multiplayer real‑time strategy where hundreds of players share a single world map. Each match begins with a small territory; you expand, manage an economy, build forces and can even launch nuclear strikes as the game progresses. The Steam version mirrors the web game, adding achievements, exclusive cosmetics and a subscription perk while keeping the same player pool.

The title supports cross‑platform multiplayer on Windows, macOS and Linux, letting you play from a browser or Steam client against the same opponents. OpenFront emphasizes strategic depth over raw aggression, rewarding balanced economic and military decisions, and offers a vibrant community‑driven development model with open‑source contributions and regular live updates.

01 / THE GUIDE

Gameplay Basics

Every match starts with a modest patch of land on a shared map. Players expand by moving forces into unclaimed or weaker territories, build ports, cities and missile defenses, and can trade or negotiate truces with neighbours. Success hinges on balancing economic growth with military strength; overextension can cause collapse while underinvestment leaves you vulnerable.

Naval warfare adds a second front, allowing sea control to project power across the map. As matches near their end, players may choose to escalate to nuclear strikes, adding a high‑stakes layer to the final push for dominance.

  • Observe neighbouring players’ expansion patterns before committing large forces.
  • Consider securing a few ports early to enable naval options later.

02 / THE GUIDE

Map Variety

OpenFront offers multiple world maps, each demanding a distinct strategy. Europe’s choke points favor diplomacy and timing, Asia’s open terrain encourages rapid expansion, and the global map introduces full ocean control as a critical factor. These differing layouts turn each match into a unique puzzle to solve.

Because every map shares the same player pool, learning the geographic strengths of each region can inform whether you focus on land conquest, naval dominance, or a blend of both, depending on the map you are placed on.

  • Test a few matches on each map to see which terrain suits your playstyle.
  • On ocean‑heavy maps, prioritize building ports early.

Cosmetics

Territory skins and real‑world flags are purely visual and visible to all players. Unlockable patterns range from minimalist designs to meme‑style skins, and Steam purchasers receive exclusive cosmetics, including a new exclusive skin each month for six months. All cosmetics are earned through play or purchased in the in‑game shop.

Because cosmetics do not affect gameplay, they serve as a way to personalize your presence on the map without providing any competitive advantage.

  • Mix and match skins to create a distinctive visual identity.
  • Check the shop regularly for new exclusive Steam skins.

Clans and Competitive Play

Players can join or create clans, which are identified by tags that appear in team modes. Clan performance is tracked globally on leaderboards, and the OpenFront Masters (OFM) organization runs monthly cash‑prized tournaments with referees and anti‑cheat rules. A dedicated Discord and spectator format support the competitive scene.

Ranked Free‑For‑All (FFA) with an Elo system is slated for release on both Steam and the web, expanding the competitive options beyond clan‑based matches.

  • Coordinate with clan members to plan joint expansions and defenses.
  • Watch OFM tournament streams to learn high‑level strategies.

Community Development

OpenFront began as an open‑source project shaped entirely by player feedback. The development roadmap is public on GitHub, and community members can submit bug reports, feature requests, or code contributions that directly influence the game. Live streams every other Friday provide updates and answer player questions.

Early Access on Steam funds continued development, including features such as ranked FFA, profile levelling, clan maps, a mobile overhaul, new game modes, map creation tools, and Steam Workshop support.

  • Visit the GitHub roadmap to see upcoming features and vote with feedback.
  • Join the Friday live streams to stay informed about development priorities.
