About NIMBY Rails
NIMBY Rails lets you design and operate railway networks on a planet‑wide map rendered at 1 cm resolution. You can lay tracks across continents, respect existing roads, and watch your rail company generate profit while serving simulated passenger demand. The game offers automatic building tools for quick prototypes and a manual mode for detailed control, supports multiple train categories, and includes an optional online co‑op mode for collaborative planning.
01 / THE GUIDE
Real‑World Map and 1 cm Detail
The sandbox uses a fully detailed real‑world map where each centimeter in the game equals one centimetre on the ground, enabling routes from Lisbon to Shanghai or any other global connection.
Because the map covers the entire planet, you can experiment with extreme distances, time‑zone differences, and varied terrain while ensuring tracks avoid excessive road crossings.
- Begin with a short regional segment to become familiar with the map’s scale before expanding globally.
- Zoom in on intersections to verify that tracks respect existing roads and streets.

Automatic Track and Signal Aids
The editor can automatically create double tracks, stations, and entrance/exit signaling with a few clicks, speeding up large‑scale construction.
If you prefer full control, the automatic aids can be disabled, allowing you to place each track piece, signal, and building manually.
- Use the automatic tools for early prototypes, then switch to manual mode to fine‑tune bottlenecks.
- After disabling aids, experiment with custom signal layouts for advanced traffic management.

Variety of Trains and Infrastructure
NIMBY Rails supports trams, subways, commuter, regional, and high‑speed trains, each with distinct speed and cost characteristics.
You can construct tunnels, viaducts, or ground tracks, each influencing construction cost, environmental impact, and train performance.
- Pair high‑speed lines with viaducts to maintain speed over rough terrain.
- Use subways in dense urban areas to reduce surface disruption.

Passenger Demand and Experience Simulation
The game simulates individual passengers, their travel patterns, and transfers between trains. Demand varies by time of day, day of week, and time zone.
Passengers rate trips based on travel time and fares, feeding back into station demand and influencing future ridership.
- Monitor peak‑hour demand to schedule extra services and avoid overcrowding.
- Adjust fares gradually to observe changes in passenger ratings and demand.

Optional Cooperative Multiplayer
Beyond single‑player, NIMBY Rails offers an online co‑op mode where friends can join a hosted server and build together in real time.
The core game runs without an internet connection; multiplayer is an optional addition that requires a hosted session.
- Assign each player a geographic sector to avoid overlapping work.
- Communicate schedule changes early to keep the shared network synchronized.
