About Moonring
Moonring is a free, retro‑inspired open‑world RPG that blends classic tile‑based exploration with modern design. Players become Dreamless in the post‑darkness land of Caldera, where five moons illuminate a world of Gods, Gifts, and a Dreamless Archon.
The game features turn‑based combat, 35 Gifts whose effects shift with moon phases, sailing with ship‑to‑ship combat and boarding, and a Dungeon Synth soundtrack of over fifty tracks. It runs on Windows and macOS, supports Steam Cloud and Family Sharing, and is single‑player.
01 / THE GUIDE
Hand‑Designed Open World
Caldera’s geography is manually crafted, giving each town, road, and landscape a distinct visual identity. The world is open, allowing players to travel wherever they choose without forced direction.
Because the world is hand‑designed, locations such as towns and trade routes remain consistent, letting players plan routes and revisit places while still feeling free to explore at their own pace.
- Talk to townsfolk early; they often mention distant locations worth visiting.
- Mark key towns on your own map to reduce backtracking.

Infinite Name‑Based Dungeons
Each time you leave a dungeon—or die—a new set of dungeons is generated using your character’s name, providing an endless supply of fresh underground challenges.
These dungeons contain a range of enemies, from simple fodder to bosses, ensuring that the difficulty can scale as you encounter new layouts.
- Try different character names to see how dungeon layouts vary.
- Prepare for a mix of enemy types when entering a newly generated dungeon.

Gifts and Moon Phase Mechanics
There are 35 unique Gifts from the Gods, each granting a supernatural ability. The effect of a Gift changes according to the current moon phase, making the celestial cycle a factor in planning actions.
Observing the moons before combat or exploration can help you decide which Gifts are likely to be most useful at that moment.
- Check the moon phase before a tough encounter to select an appropriate Gift.
- Note which Gifts feel strongest under each phase for future reference.

Sailing and Ship‑to‑Ship Combat
Players can sail across Caldera’s waters, encountering other vessels that may be boarded or fought. Ship‑to‑ship combat uses the same turn‑based system as land encounters.
Boarding an enemy ship extends the battle onto its deck, adding a tactical layer while still relying on the core combat mechanics.
- Practice boarding smaller ships first to learn the combat flow.
- Observe enemy ship positions to choose when to engage or avoid.

Dungeon Synth Soundtrack
The game’s atmosphere is supported by a Dungeon Synth OST containing over fifty tracks, all created with retro Mod trackers. The music plays throughout exploration and combat.
The retro‑style soundtrack complements the bright sprites on stark black backgrounds, reinforcing the nostalgic feel of classic computer RPGs.
- Adjust volume to keep the synth tracks audible during exploration.
- Listen for changes in the music to notice shifts in game mood.
