About Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin lets you become a Monster Rider, hatching and raising monsters while traveling beyond Hakolo Island. The story follows Red’s grandchild, who must protect an egg entrusted by Guardian Ratha as Rathalos disappear worldwide.
The game blends turn‑based battles, gene‑based Monstie growth, and online multiplayer. Players can team up for co‑op expeditions, face rivals in Versus mode, and customize their Rider with optional cosmetic DLC.
01 / THE GUIDE
Story and Egg Hatching
The narrative opens on a festival night in Mahana, where the player learns that Rathalos are vanishing and inherits an egg from Guardian Ratha. Together with Ena, a Wyverian girl, they leave the island to protect the egg, which later hatches a flightless Rathalos with small wings.
Eggs appear in Monster Dens that randomly spawn in the field, including rare dens that contain hard‑to‑find genes. After exiting a den, you bring the egg to the Stables where it can be hatched into a new Monstie for your party.
- Visit Monster Dens regularly to increase chances of finding rare eggs.
- Bring eggs to the Stables promptly after a den visit.

Monstie Growth and Genes
After hatching, Monsties level up through battles and the Rite of Channeling, a ritual that transfers a gene from one Monstie to another. During the ritual you choose which gene slot receives the transferred gene, allowing new abilities to awaken in the recipient.
The gene‑slot choice lets you combine abilities from different sources, creating original Monstie builds. By planning which slots to fill, you can shape each Monstie's skill set to match the demands of upcoming battles.
- Plan gene placement before the Rite to align with your combat goals.
- Use the Rite after major battles to increase the chance of unlocking powerful abilities.

Turn‑Based Combat
Combat features three attack types—Power, Speed, and Technical. Predicting an opponent’s type and winning a Head‑to‑Head grants high damage and fills the Kinship Gauge, influencing the flow of battle.
Six classic Monster Hunter weapon types are available, and layered armor can be equipped. Mastering each weapon’s characteristics lets you adapt to different monster weaknesses while using familiar equipment customization.
- Observe enemy patterns to anticipate their attack type.
- Experiment with different weapons to discover which suit each monster’s weakness.

Multiplayer Modes
Online multiplayer supports Co‑Op Expedition Quests, where players can join each other in the field and assist when one engages a monster. This cooperation lets teams search for rare eggs together and tackle tougher foes.
Versus Battles pit Riders against each other directly. In this mode, players compete using the same turn‑based system, testing prediction skills and Monstie builds against human opponents worldwide.
- Coordinate with teammates before entering a Monster Den for smoother co‑op play.
- Practice Versus matches to refine your attack‑type predictions.
