About Modern Naval Warfare
Modern Naval Warfare is a single‑player submarine simulation that emphasizes realistic graphics, acoustic modeling, and physics. Players command nuclear‑powered vessels, navigating oceans built from real‑world GIS data while operating detailed crew stations and weapon systems.
The game includes an 18‑mission Technothriller campaign set in the South China Sea, a three‑mission training sequence, and a quick‑mission editor for custom scenarios. It runs on Windows and supports Family Sharing.
01 / THE GUIDE
Visual Fidelity
The engine uses physically‑based rendering and world lighting to depict Earth’s curvature at altitude and realistic ocean caustics. Volumetric clouds and dynamic weather are driven by GIS‑assisted conditions, producing multi‑layered wave effects that react to the environment.
Lighting and reflections are rendered with physically-based shading, while the world is built on real-world GIS data. These visual systems operate alongside the simulation’s physics to maintain immersion during both surface and submerged operations.
- Observe cloud density changes across weather layers to anticipate visibility shifts.
- Compare surface reflections at different sun angles to gauge depth cues.

Acoustic & Physics Simulation
A 3‑D sound propagation model calculates transients, flow noise, and component sounds such as engines, pumps, and propellers in real time. FFT analysis supports Narrowband, LOFAR, and DEMON modes, modulated by sonar array characteristics.
Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic calculations affect every object, influencing weapon movement, explosions, and material reactions to pressure. Damage modeling includes volumetric flooding based on shipbuilding concepts like permeability.
- Listen for subtle pump noises to infer nearby vessel activity.
- Use FFT displays to differentiate between broadband and narrowband contacts.

Crew Stations
Players can assume roles at native‑language stations: Pilot controls depth, speed, course, trimming, and masts; SONAR manages broadband, narrowband, active intercept, and tactical decision aid; Fire Control offers Target Motion Analysis with interactive rulers for missiles.
ESM & RADAR stations intercept threats and monitor AIS signals, while each station features fully clickable, feature‑complete control panels modeled after Virginia‑class CIC layouts.
- Switch between stations to see how sonar data feeds fire‑control targeting.
- Check AIS displays regularly to maintain situational awareness of civilian traffic.

Technothriller Campaign
The campaign consists of 18 missions set in the South China Sea, covering anti‑submarine warfare, convoy hunts, special‑forces insertion, and espionage. Each mission requires use of the game’s sensors and weapons within a single‑player context.
Objectives involve torpedoes, multi‑stage missiles, mines, and countermeasures such as noisemakers, sonar decoys, chaff, and flares, all modeled with physics‑based behavior.
- Plan routes using INS and GPS before entering high‑risk convoy zones.
- Deploy decoys pre‑emptively when sonar contacts become persistent.

Training & Mission Editor
A three‑mission training sequence introduces core systems and controls. Afterward, the built‑in quick mission editor lets players design custom challenges, creating custom challenges with the built-in quick mission editor.
Editor scenarios allow experimentation with tactics and system interactions without altering the core campaign.
- Start with simple weather presets to focus on sonar practice.
- Reuse saved scenarios to compare performance across different weapon loadouts.
