The Banners & Wonders update adds open‑map construction, faction personalities, new maps, Steam achievements and adjustable difficulty, letting you choose a relaxed or challenging experience that changes objectives, faction pressure and resource balance.
01 / THE GUIDE
Five Historical Ages
The game is divided into five distinct periods: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution. Each age unlocks new architectural styles, building options and monuments, reshaping the visual and strategic landscape.
Progression is tied to your dynasty’s growth; as you advance, fresh construction choices appear and the city’s layout evolves without a fixed grid, ensuring each era feels fresh and demands new planning.
- Check which building types become available at each age before allocating resources.
- Compare the architectural shift between ages to anticipate district needs.

Organic City Growth
Cities expand naturally through districts shaped by player placement and citizen activity, rather than a rigid grid. This organic growth means each playthrough produces a unique layout that reflects strategic decisions.
There are no cycle limits or closed districts, so you can freely extend the city. The shape of districts follows the flow of demand, giving a living sense to the evolving metropolis.
- Place early buildings where you want districts to form, guiding later expansion.
- Observe how citizen needs push district borders over time.

Faction Personalities
Factions now carry distinct personalities—Altruist, Warrior, Expansionist, and others—each presenting its own set of demands. You may accept proposals, negotiate terms, or favor one faction, influencing resource flow and political pressure.
Interaction with factions is optional; you can engage as much or as little as you wish, adding depth without forcing a single strategic path.
- Identify which faction personality aligns with your current resource situation.
- Try different negotiation approaches to see how faction pressure varies.

Industrial Era Wonders
Reaching the Industrial Revolution unlocks a final objective: constructing one of three iconic Wonders. Completing a Wonder signals the culmination of your dynasty’s progress and provides a historic landmark for your city.
Each Wonder is visually distinct, offering a clear end‑game target that differentiates successful playthroughs and encourages long‑term planning.
- Assess which Wonder’s implied requirements best match your accumulated resources.
- Consider the visual impact of each Wonder when deciding your final project.

Adjustable Difficulty
At the start of a run you select a difficulty level that modifies resources, faction pressure and objectives. This lets you tailor the experience from relaxed to challenging, matching personal preference.
Difficulty levels adjust faction pressure and resource balance, providing a scalable challenge while keeping core mechanics unchanged.
- Begin with a relaxed setting to learn faction dynamics before raising pressure.
- Use a challenging level to test resource‑management strategies you have refined.
