About Mala Petaka
Mala Petaka is a 2‑D pixel‑art shooter built on GZDoom. Players control the amnesiac protagonist Petaka, traveling through warp portals to explore multiple universes while seeking his lost memories. The visual style mimics NES‑era cartoons and the soundtrack features 8‑bit chiptune tracks by Indonesian artists.
The game offers two single‑player modes—Story Mode and Horde Mode—across four difficulty settings (Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard). A varied arsenal, more than twenty enemy types, and temporary power‑ups such as Time Freeze, Rampage, and God Mode give each playthrough distinct tactical choices.
01 / THE GUIDE
Story Mode
Story Mode begins at a Hub map where warp portals let you choose the level you want to attempt first. The hub does not force a specific order; each portal simply transports you to a separate level for you to explore.
In Story Mode you complete individual levels rather than survive endless waves. The Hub’s warp portals let you choose which level to beat first, so you can plan your route through the game’s levels.
- Choose your portal deliberately, since the Hub lets you pick which level to beat first.
- Use a lower difficulty for early runs to become familiar with enemy layouts.
02 / THE GUIDE
Horde Mode
Horde Mode pits the player against continuous waves of enemies, emphasizing survival over narrative progression. The mode presents a series of enemy waves that repeat until the player is defeated.
Horde Mode focuses on survival, letting you test different weapon combos as the waves continue. The mode does not include a story‑driven objective.
- Stay alert as enemies keep coming so you can react when a new wave begins.
- Experiment with alternate fire to see which weapons handle larger groups best.

03 / THE GUIDE
Weapon Arsenal
The game provides fists, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, grenade launcher, plasma rifle, and additional weapons. Each weapon includes an alternate fire mode that behaves differently from its primary fire.
The arsenal ranges from fists to a plasma rifle, and every weapon has an alternate fire. No other weapon‑specific mechanics are described.
- Try each weapon’s alternate fire in a safe area to learn its effect.
- Switch weapons when the enemy type changes to keep damage effective.
04 / THE GUIDE
Enemy Variety
Mala Petaka lists more than twenty enemy types, including one‑eyed aliens and attacking drones. Petaka encounters these enemies as he journeys through multiple universes.
Enemy behavior is not detailed beyond their description, but the variety suggests differing movement and attack patterns that require player adaptation.
- Observe an enemy’s movement before engaging to decide the best attack method.
- Prioritize fast‑moving drones early to reduce the chance of being overwhelmed.
05 / THE GUIDE
Power‑Ups
Temporary power‑ups such as Time Freeze, Rampage, and God Mode appear during combat. Each grants a distinct advantage for a limited period, for example slowing time or increasing damage.
Fist Barrage is a separate mechanic that grants health and armor bonuses when activated with a single key press. It does not replace the listed power‑ups.
- Save God Mode for moments when enemy density peaks.
- Combine Time Freeze with rapid‑fire weapons to maximize damage while time is slowed.
