About Inside the Backrooms
Inside the Backrooms is an online co‑op horror adventure for up to four players. Teams explore endless yellow‑walled rooms, collect items, solve puzzles and avoid hostile entities while trying to escape each level. The game draws heavily from the original creepypasta, featuring recognizable entities and a bleak, carpet‑covered atmosphere.
Five main levels and two secret mini‑levels increase in difficulty, each introducing new puzzles, mechanics and threats. Players must manage stamina, anxiety and limited inventory space, using tools such as flashlights, radios and protection suits to survive and progress toward the secret ending.
01 / THE GUIDE
Levels and Progression
The game currently offers five large levels, each designed to be harder than the previous one. Two hidden mini‑levels provide an alternate route to a secret ending. Progression is tied to solving puzzles and unlocking new map areas.
Each level introduces distinct puzzles and mechanics, and the solutions change with every new game, preventing a single static answer from working repeatedly.
- Explore thoroughly before attempting a puzzle; clues may be hidden in the environment.
- Take note of which level you are on; difficulty spikes are intentional.

Entities and Threats
Six different entities, based on the original creepypasta, roam the rooms. Each has its own attack style and can increase player anxiety when seen. Encountering multiple entities simultaneously is especially dangerous.
Learning each entity’s behavior is essential; avoiding them reduces anxiety and preserves visibility, which is otherwise impaired by fear.
- Stay quiet; proximity voice chat can alert entities.
- When an entity appears, retreat to a safe spot to let anxiety subside.

Puzzles and Dynamics
Puzzles range from simple to complex and are crafted for both solo and cooperative solving. The answer to each puzzle changes each playthrough, ensuring dynamic challenge.
Co‑op play encourages communication, but voice chat can also draw entity attention, adding a risk‑reward element to puzzle collaboration.
- Discuss possible solutions quickly to limit voice exposure.
- Try multiple approaches; the solution is not fixed.

Items and Management
Players can collect items such as almond water, pills, radios, flashlights, protection suits, and documents. Inventory space is limited, so careful selection is required.
Some items restore health, reduce anxiety, enable communication, or protect against radiation, making them vital for survival in later, more dangerous areas.
- Prioritize items that address immediate threats like anxiety or low stamina.
- Keep a flashlight handy for dark zones.

Core Features
Key systems include proximity voice chat, stamina management, limited inventory, anxiety buildup, and a three‑time respawn mechanic. Stamina aids escape when entities are near, while anxiety reduces visibility.
The game supports tracked controllers, Steam achievements, and online co‑op, allowing players to share the experience via Family Sharing.
- Monitor stamina during chases; conserve it when possible.
- Use the respawn limit strategically; avoid unnecessary deaths.
