About HyperRogue
HyperRogue drops you into a lone adventure across a hyperbolic plane, where geometry bends the usual rules. You wander through about 60 distinct lands, each offering its own treasures, monsters, and terrain quirks, while hunting the legendary Orbs of Yendor.
The game blends roguelike exploration with non‑Euclidean puzzles, drawing inspiration from Escher, DRoD, and experimental modes such as racing, real‑time shmup, 3D Thurston geometries, and VR first‑person shooting. Frequent updates keep the experience fresh.
01 / THE GUIDE
Hyperbolic Geometry
The world is built on a hyperbolic plane, displaying a grid of hexagons and heptagons where straight lines appear parallel then diverge forever. Triangles have angles that sum to less than 180°, creating navigation that feels unlike Euclidean space.
Because the plane expands exponentially, reaching the same spot twice is extremely unlikely; even after 700 steps you could be in one of centillions of locations, and returning may feel like the world has rotated.
- Watch how lines that seem parallel eventually separate; it helps gauge distance.
- Keep a simple movement log to notice when the world appears rotated after long walks.

Lands and Treasure
HyperRogue features roughly 60 lands, each with its own terrain obstacles, enemies, and treasure types. Collecting smaller treasures is optional, but gathering an Orb of Yendor ends the game in victory.
Monsters roam these lands, adding danger to treasure hunts. The variety of environments encourages different approaches for both combat and exploration.
- Start in lands with fewer enemies when focusing on smaller treasures.
- Observe monster movement patterns before venturing deeper.

Experimental Game Modes
Beyond the core 2D hyperbolic roguelike, HyperRogue offers experimental modes such as racing, real‑time shmup, and 3D geometries including Thurston spaces. These modes let players tweak many aspects for non‑Euclidean experimentation.
A VR mode also exists, allowing a first‑person shooter experience within the same hyperbolic world, expanding how the geometry feels in immersive play.
- Try racing mode to test navigation speed on the hyperbolic plane.
- Use the 3D geometry mode to compare how shapes behave differently from 2D.

Multiplayer and Co‑op
HyperRogue supports multiplayer, co‑op, shared/split‑screen, and Remote Play Together, letting multiple players explore or compete in the same hyperbolic space. Steam achievements and leaderboards are also listed among the game's features.
Trading cards and family sharing are also available, providing additional ways to engage with the community and share progress.
- Coordinate with co‑op partners to cover more lands quickly.
- Check leaderboards for strategies other players have used successfully.

Platform and Controller Support
HyperRogue runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and includes partial controller support, tracked controller support, and VR compatibility. The game offers a level editor for custom content, and Steam Cloud is listed among its features.
Family Sharing and Steam Trading Cards round out the platform features, ensuring the game integrates smoothly with the broader Steam ecosystem.
- Use the level editor to experiment with your own non‑Euclidean maps.
- Steam Cloud is listed as a feature, so you can check what it offers for your setup.
