About Howling Woods
Howling Woods lets you design a Halloween‑themed town inside a forest clearing. You place plots, paths and set pieces, and the game automatically builds crooked houses, curio shops and spooky workshops while residents such as goblins, ghosts and witches move in.
The experience has no monetary costs, timers or failure conditions, and you can store up to eight towns. You can also adjust moon phases, spookiness levels, leaf density and lighting patterns, then capture scenes with postcard‑mode filters.

Town Building
Each new town begins in its own hollow. You can reshape the land by raising hills, digging black ponds, and planting woods, graves or cornfields before the town takes over the layout.
After the terrain is set, the town automatically constructs homes, shops and workshops on the appropriate plots, and the overall “fright” score determines how tall and elaborate the settlement becomes.
- Try different hill heights to shape the landscape around your plots.
- Observe how adding a graveyard early influences the town’s fright growth.

Plot Types
Three plot categories exist: haunts for homes, curios for shops and breweries for workshops. The game lists nine curio trades and six workshop types ranging from potions to toffee works.
Placing a plot leads to the matching building going up, and each building contributes to the town’s overall spookiness score that drives further growth.
- Mix curio and brewery plots to vary the town's shops and workshops.
- Place haunt plots near set pieces for a spookier streetscape.

Paths & Lighting
Four path styles—trail, dirt, stone and cobble—can be laid. When a street is paved, street lamps appear automatically, adding illumination.
Three light patterns (Ember, Hex and Brew) affect ambience, while a dread map shows which areas are cold and which are truly haunted.
- Use stone or cobble paths near set pieces for a more imposing look.
- Switch light patterns to compare their effect on perceived spookiness.

Set Pieces
Fifteen set pieces are available from the start, including the Graveyard, Haunted Manor, Witch’s Cauldron, Belfry, Hay Maze, Mausoleum and Stolen Candy Pile. Each radiates dread and can be placed anywhere on the map.
Adding set pieces raises the town’s fright level, which in turn brings taller buildings and more elaborate decorations.
- Cluster several set pieces to create a high‑dread zone quickly.
- Place the Belfry near the Hay Maze for thematic cohesion.

Atmosphere & Visual Modes
You can choose the moon phase (new, half, full or a slow cycle), spookiness level (calm to nightmare), autumn leaf density and one of three light patterns. These settings shape the town’s overall feel.
Postcard mode frames the town for screenshots, offering filters such as Moonlit, Daguerreotype and Witching Hour so you can capture your favorite haunted scenes.
- Try a full moon with nightmare spookiness for dramatic screenshots.
- Use the Witching Hour filter to emphasize shadows and fog.
